Panthers score first nine goals on way to key NE-10 win
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 18, 2015) – Adelphi University, ranked No. 1 in both the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll and the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Top 20, scored the first nine goals of the contest and didn't look back in posting a 15-5 triumph over Stonehill College, ranked 6th in the IWLCA poll and 7th in the Lacrosse Magazine Top 20, in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Motamed Field today.
Sophomore Jacqueline Jahelka (Garden City, New York/Garden City) scored five goals and senior Alexa Froccaro (Port Washington, New York/Port Washington) tallied six points with four goals and two assists to lead Adelphi to the key NE-10 and regional win. Junior Rachel O'Brien (Bayport, New York/Bayport-Blue Point) added five points with a goal and four assists, while junior Emily Keesling (Bel Air, Maryland/Patterson Mill) netted a pair of goals. Senior Danielle Jaycox (Amityville, New York/St. John the Baptist) chipped in with a goal and assist with two caused turnovers.
Junior Taylor Hayes (Rockville Center, New York/Kellenberg) earned the win in goal for Adelphi with five saves in 32:14 after junior Taylor Langston (Carlsbad, California/La Costa Canyon) made one stop over the first 27:48. The Panthers posted a 32-12 advantage in shots for the contest and forced 17 Stonehill turnovers while committing just ten. The Skyhawks held a 12-10 edge in draw controls. Senior Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Massachusetts/Algonquin Regional) stopped five shots, including one save on a free-position shot.
Sophomore Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, New York/East Islip) led Stonehill with two goals and an assist to go with eight draw controls. Senior Cassandra McGill (Westborough, Massachusetts/Westborough) added a goal and assist, while classmates Jillian Yung (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) and Emily Kessel (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) each chipped in with a goal.

Adelphi scored the first nine goals of the game, including seven in the opening nine minutes, on its way to the win. Senior Felicia Mills (Islip, New York/Islip) started the run with a free-position goal on the opening possession just 45-seconds into the game. Froccaro and O'Brien added goals just 20-seconds apart to extend the lead to three goals after four minutes.
Sophomore Kate Beier (West Islip, New York/West Islip) scored off an O'Brien feed 5:15 into the game and then Jahelka added her first of back to back markers, assisted by Froccaro 26-seconds later for a five goal Adelphi lead. Jahelka's second straight goal, assisted by O'Brien, extended the Panthers lead to six goals and then Froccaro added back to back goals, both assisted by O'Brien, for an eight goal advantage with 18:37 remaining in the first half. Froccaro had three goals and an assist during the opening run, while O'Brien had a goal and four assists.
Keesling pushed Adelphi's lead to 9-0 with a free-position goal with 12:49 left in the half and then Stonehill got on the board with Vetter's first of the afternoon with 11:09 to play. The Skyhawks scored three times in the final 11 minutes, two from Vetter, but Adelphi answered each marker with a goal of its own, with Froccaro adding a goal and assist in the final 10:35, to carry a 12-3 lead into halftime.
The teams combined for five goals in the second half as Adelphi made its first half scoring stand. McGill opened the second half scoring for Stonehill four minutes in, but the Panthers scored the next three goals, including two from Jahelka, before Yung capped the scoring, assisted by Vetter, with 2:08 remaining.
Stonehill (13-2, 10-2 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday when it visits Saint Anselm College, ranked 20th in the IWLCA Division II poll, for its final NE-10 regular season game of the season at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday when it closes out the regular season with a key regional clash with No. 9/11 LIU Post for Senior Day at noon. Adelphi (14-0, 11-0 NE-10) hosts the University of New Haven on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
