#4/6 Stonehill Bounces Back Against St. Michael’s, 17-3

Vetter and Lane pace Skyhawks attack with four goals each 

EASTON, Mass. (April 11, 2015) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Top 20 and sixth in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, bounced back from its first defeat of the season with a commanding 17-3 triumph over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Senior Lizzie Lane (Sandwich, Massachusetts/Bishop Stang) and sophomore Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, New York/East Islip) paced the Stonehill attack with four goals each, while seniors Mikayla Couch (Towaco, New Jersey/DePaul Catholic) and Brooke Rudden (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) each tallied five point days. Vetter also collected a team-high eight draw controls to go with two ground balls and a caused turnover to her four goal effort, while Lane caused four turnovers and added four ground balls and three draws with her four markers.

Couch contributed three goals and two assists for Stonehill, while Rudden dished out five assists. Sophomore Shannon Booth (Pearl River, New York/Nanuet) netted a career-high three goals for the Skyhawks, while senior Cassandra McGill (Westborough, Massachusetts/Westborough) chipped in a goal and assist.

Senior Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Massachusetts/Algonquin Regional) posted her 45th career win in the Stonehill goal, moving within two of the program's career record of 47 victories set by Stonehill Athletics Hall of Famer Lauren Stone '06, with six saves, including two on free-position shots. The Skyhawks posted a 27-13 advantage for shots and a 16-6 edge in draw controls. Sophomore Grace Gunning (Norwell, Massachusetts/Norwell) was one of three Saint Michael's goalkeepers in action this afternoon, finishing with seven saves in 32:51.

Seniors Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Maryland/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) as well as junior Steph Bonewald (New London, New Hampshire/Proctor Academy) all netted goals for Saint Michael's. Bonewald also collected two draws, a caused turnover and ground ball, while Jaskiewicz chipped in with two ground balls and a draw.

Stonehill scored the first five goals of the contest and never looked back as Vetter netted three of those five markers in the opening 7:41 to spark the Skyhawks. Couch contributed a goal and assist during that stretch for Stonehill. Vetter scored two straight goals in the opening 1:36 for the Skyhawks before Couch and Lane added goals within a two minute span. Vetter capped the five goal run with her third marker with 22:19 remaining in the first half.

Boyer and Bonewald sandwiched Couch's second goal of the afternoon to pull Saint Michael's within 6-2 with 9:11 remaining in the first half, but Stonehill scored five times over the final 5:29 to take a nine goal lead (11-2) into halftime after Lane's third score of the day with 45-seconds left, assisted by Rudden. Rudden dished out three of her four first half assists during the five goal stretch to close out the half for Stonehill, while Booth tallied two goals.

Stonehill stretched that five goal run to cap the first half to a ten goal spree by scoring the first five goals of the second half to run its lead to 16-2 after a Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) goal with 9:20 remaining. Lane opened the second half scoring with her third of the day 5:54 in, with Couch and senior Jillian Yung (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) adding scores as well.

Jaskiewicz broke up the Stonehill run for Saint Michael's with 6:06 to play before Lane capped her four goal afternoon with 2:08 to go for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill (13-1, 10-1 NE-10) has the next week off before returning to action with a huge NE-10 matchup at top-ranked Adelphi University on Long Island next Saturday at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks return home in two weeks when it closes out their regular season with a key regional clash with LIU Post for Senior Day on Saturday, April 25, at noon. Saint Michael's (3-7, 3-6 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
