Armstrong becomes Skyhawks all-time saves leader
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (April 8, 2015) – Le Moyne College, ranked No. 4 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association (IWLCA) Division II poll and 6th in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Top 20, used a five goal run to open a six goal lead in the first half on its way to a 12-8 victory and hand Stonehill College, ranked 4th in the Lacrosse Magazine poll and 6th in the IWLCA poll, its first loss of the season in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Ted Grant Field this afternoon.
Juniors Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, New York/C.W. Baker) and Erica Geremia (Camillus, New York/West Genesee) both posted six point games and senior Julia Suriani (Buffalo, New York/West Seneca East) scored four goals to lead Le Moyne to its eighth straight win. Monnat posted a goal and five assists on the afternoon for the Dolphins, while Geremia tallied two goals and four assists. Senior Laura Hoffman (Canandaigua, New York/Canandaigua) netted three goals, while classmate Catie McKay (Penfield, New York/Our Lady of Mercy) chipped in with a goal and assist.
Senior Molly Marbut (Edgewater, Maryland/South River) preserved the win in goal for Le Moyne with three saves. The Dolphins held a 21-18 edge in shots and 12-11 margin in draw controls, but took advantage of 16 Stonehill turnovers, including ten in the second half, to secure the win, scoring six goals off those Skyhawk giveaways.
Senior Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Massachusetts/Algonquin Regional) finished with five saves in the Stonehill goal, taking sole possession of the program's career saves record with her first stop of the afternoon and finishing the game with 484 for her career, surpassing the previous record of 479 set by Carissa Medeiros '03. She posted one save on free-position shots as the Dolphins didn't convert on their two free-position attempts.
Senior Cassandra McGill (Westborough, Massachusetts/Westborough) led Stonehill with five points, scoring two goals and dishing out three assists, while sophomore Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, New York/East Islip) netted four goals for the Skyhawks and collected five draw controls and two caused turnovers. Senior Lizzie Lane (Sandwich, New York/Bishop Stang) chipped in with a goal, three draws, two ground balls and a caused turnover.

The teams traded goals over the first seven minutes of the game before Le Moyne broke free with five straight markers as part of a 7-1 run to open a six goal lead (9-3) after Hoffman's second goal of the half with 5:15 remaining. Suriani sparked the run with the first three goals, the latter two assisted by Geremia, within a four minute span. Geremia capped the five goal stretch with her first goal of the afternoon with 10:38 left in the half for a 7-2 Dolphins lead.
Junior Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Massachusetts/Reading Memorial) broke up the run with her 14th goal of the year with 6:56 remaining in the half, but freshman Abbie McEntee (Cazenovia, New York/Cazenovia) answered for Le Moyne off the draw just 15-seconds later before Hoffman capped the Dolphins first half scoring with 5:15 left.
Vetter's second goal of the game wrapped up the first half scoring with 1:38 left, but Le Moyne opened the second half scoring when Hoffman scored off a Monnat feed 2:34 in. Stonehill threatened to get back in the game with back to back goals within a two minute span by McGill with 24:07 remaining and then Vetter with 22:16 on the clock.
Le Moyne responded with three straight goals to open a seven goal cushion (13-6) after an unassisted marker by Geremia with 15:03 left which proved to seal the victory. Geremia also dished an assist on a Monnat goal that stopped the Stonehill run with 18:53 to play. The Skyhawks scored the final two goals of the contest, with McGill playing a role in both with a goal and assist in the final 12:58.
Stonehill (12-1, 9-1 NE-10) returns home on Saturday to host Saint Michael's College for an NE-10 matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 1 p.m. Please note the time change on that contest, from the original noon start, and also note that the College will be hosting an admissions "Skyhawk Welcome Day." Parking for the game will be in the Holy Cross Center Lot located adjacent to building B12 on the campus map linked here. Le Moyne (11-1, 8-0 NE-10) visits Pace University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
