Northborough, Mass., junior earns honors for second-straight year
EASTON, Mass. (May 5, 2014) – Stonehill College junior goalkeeper Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Massachusetts/Algonquin Regional) has been named to the Northeast-10 Conference All-Championship team for her efforts during last week's NE-10 Tournament it was announced at the conclusion of the championship game on Sunday afternoon.
Armstrong earns All-Championship team honors for the second straight year after posting a pair of 12 save performances in Stonehill's two NE-10 Tournament contests last week. She played all 120 minutes in the two games and also stopped a combined six free-position shot attempts for the week. Armstrong opened the week by making seven of her 12 saves in the second half of the Skyhawks' 11-10 first round win over fifth-seeded and 12th-ranked Le Moyne College on Wednesday, including three stops in the closing minute and a half and two in the last 34-seconds with the final stop coming with ten seconds showing to ultimately clinch the victory. She also posted 12 saves in Saturday's semifinal setback at top-seeded and top-ranked Adelphi University, including four on free-position shots. Armstrong also collected five ground balls for the week.
Armstrong started all 19 games and played all but two minutes and 20-seconds in the Stonehill goal this season and posted a 9.44 goals against average (6th NE-10) and .466 save percentage (3rd) with 8.3 saves per game (3rd) while adding 31 ground balls and four caused turnovers in 1,143:40 (1st). She produced seven double-figure save performances this season, limiting 12 opponents to ten goals or less – including a string of seven straight games. Armstrong, who earned NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week honors three times this season, ranks 13th nationally in Division II for saves, 20th in goals against average and 25th for save percentage. Her 157 saves is the second-highest single season total in program history.
Armstrong has started 48 of the 57 games she has played over her career and posted a 10.17 goals against average and .443 save percentage with 7.5 saves per game in 2,897:08 with a 32-17 record, 120 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. She will enter her senior season ranked third in program history with 391 career saves. Armstrong has earned NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll status three semesters and Athletic Director's Honor Roll once.
Stonehill (12-7, 9-3 NE-10) made its NE-10 record 16th appearance in the Conference tournament this season, reaching its 16th semifinal. The Skyhawks are ranked 12th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll and 14th in last week's Lacrosse Magazine poll, while also being ranked sixth in the final regular season NCAA North Regional rankings.
