Jaycox and Jahelka keep Panthers unbeaten with three goals apiece
EASTON, Mass. (March 29, 2014) – Adelphi University, ranked No. 2 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, secured a 10-4 victory over 14th-ranked Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium today.
Junior Danielle Jaycox (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and freshman Jackie Jahelka (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) combined for six goals for Adelphi, netting three apiece to key the victory. Jaycox also contributed four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Jahelka chipped in with a ground ball. Junior Alexa Froccaro (Sands Point, N.Y./Port Washington) added two goals for the Panthers, while postgrad Meg Brown (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and sophomore Emily Keesling (Bel Air, Md./Patterson Mill) each chipped in with a goal. Senior Devan Crimi (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) dished out an assist and also collected seven ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Sophomore Taylor Hayes (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg) preserved the win with six saves in the Adelphi goal, as the Panthers finished with a 34-14 advantage for shots, but was just 3-for-16 on free-position shots, while holding a 9-7 edge for draw controls. Stonehill had the better of possession in the second half with a 5-3 edge on draws, while junior Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) recorded a season-high 14 saves to keep the Skyhawks in the game, including eight stops on free-position attempts.

Sophomore Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) scored two goals and collected six of Stonehill's seven draw controls on the afternoon. Senior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) added a goal and assist with a draw and two ground balls, while junior Mikayla Couch (Towaco, N.J./DePaul Catholic) chipped in with a goal and two caused turnovers.
Adelphi opened a three goal lead after five and a half minutes to take quick control after a Froccaro free-position goal. Jaycox opened the scoring 48-seconds into the contest, while Jahelka converted a pass from Crimi after 3:31. Stonehill got on the board with a free-position marker by Couch with 15:49 remaining in the half, but Adelphi scored the final three markers of the frame to take a 6-1 lead at halftime. Jaycox added her second with 10:23 left before Keesling added a free-position goal with 6:35 on the clock and Jahelka netted her second with 2:29 left.
Froccaro's second goal of the day extended Adelphi's lead to 7-1 a minute and a half into the second half. Back to back goals by Matheson pulled Stonehill back within four with 20 minutes to play. Shannahan set up Matheson's first marker a minute after Froccaro's goal and then junior Brooke Rudden (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) set up her 11th goal of the season with 20:08 on the clock.
Adelphi held firm as Jaycox's third goal of the day regained a five goal cushion (8-3) with 11:05 left. Shannahan converted a free-position goal for Stonehill with 7:25 to go, but the Panthers got markers by Jahelka and Brown over the final 4:57 to seal the win.
Stonehill (4-4, 3-2 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern New Hampshire University here at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. Adelphi (9-0, 5-0 NE-10) hosts Mercy College Wednesday at 7 p.m.
