#10 Stonehill Powers Past American International, 15-2

Green and Rudden lead Skyhawks to sixth straight win

EASTON, Mass. (March 28, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, used a five goal flurry over a five minute stretch midway through the first half to fuel a 15-2 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Senior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and sophomore Brooke Rudden (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) led Stonehill with five points apiece. Green recorded three goals and two assists, while Rudden posted a goal and a career-high four assists with two caused turnovers.

Senior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) added two goals and two assists for four points with a career-high matching six ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Senior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) contributed three goals, three ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover, while junior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) and sophomore Jillian Yung (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) both chipped in with two goals.

Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) posted a season-high nine saves in goal for Stonehill, including seven in the second half and all four free-position shots against her, to go with five ground balls and a caused turnover. The Skyhawks finished with a 29-16 advantage in shots and dominated draw controls for the second-straight game, 14-5, while converting 13-of-19 clears. Freshman Lissy Doherty (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) finished with eight stops in goal for American International to go with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Stonehill opened the scoring with two goals in the first 1:12 of the contest with Green setting up Reilly just 41-seconds in before scoring a goal of her own off a feed from Rudden. American International got a goal back 5:40 into the half as Flynn fed Dufresne for her fourth goal of the year.

Sullivan restored Stonehill's two goal lead with her first goal of the afternoon, assisted by Rudden, with 19:27 left in the half and then the Skyhawks reeled off five goals over a four and a half minute stretch to open an 8-1 lead after Rudden's seventh goal of the year with 10:21 remaining. Rudden and Sullivan both contributed a goal and assist during that stretch.

Freshman Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) and Green added unassisted goals in the closing 3:52 of the half to give Stonehill a 10-1 halftime lead. The Skyhawks scored three more goals in the opening five minutes of the second half to push the lead to 13-1 after Reilly's third goal of the game (18th of the season). Shannahan and Green also scored goals for the Skyhawks, while Rudden collected her fourth assist, during the run.

Yung pushed the lead to 14-1 with her second marker of the game (fifth of the season) with 16:12 to play before Flynn scored for American International with 13:02 on the clock. Sophomore Elizabeth Lane (Sandwich, Mass./Bishop Stang) rounded out the scoring with her ninth goal of the year on a free-position shot with 1:47 to play.

Junior Brittany Flynn (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) recorded a goal and assist for two points for American International, with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman Stefanie Dufresne (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) added a goal, four ground balls, and a draw control and caused turnover.

Stonehill (6-2, 5-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday for a key NE-10 clash at No. 5 Adelphi University to open a string of three straight road games at 10:30 a.m. The Skyhawks don't return home until Tuesday, April 9, to host Bentley University, currently ranked 8th nationally, at 7 p.m. American International (1-7, 0-5 NE-10) hosts Bentley next Wednesday, April 3, at 4 p.m.
