#10 Stonehill Cruises Past Saint Michael’s in NE-10 Opener, 17-5

Green leads Skyhawks to second-straight win with five points

EASTON, Mass. (March 18, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, opened its Northeast-10 Conference schedule with a commanding 17-5 victory over Saint Michael's College in women's lacrosse action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Senior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led a balanced Stonehill attack with four goals and an assist for five points. Junior Mary Lee Mahony (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) added four points with a goal and team-high three assists, while senior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) tallied three goals, a ground ball and caused turnover. Sophomore Elizabeth Lane (Sandwich, Mass./Bishop Stang) contributed three goals and two draw controls.

Senior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) registered two goals and a game-high five draw controls, while sophomore Emily Faherty (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) totaled two goals, three draw controls, a ground ball and caused turnover. Junior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) chipped in with a goal and assist for two points with two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) posted five saves over the first 50:23 in net for Stonehill, before senior Caitlyn Taveira (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) came in to make two stops over the final 9:37. Stonehill posted a 31-15 advantage for shots in the game as well as a 16-8 edge in draw controls. Freshman Casey Curtin (Waltham, Mass./Ursuline Academy) finished with nine saves in goal for Saint Michael's.

Senior Caitlin Mahoney (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) led Saint Michael's with two goals, while sophomore Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) contributed a goal and three draw controls. Juniors Caroline Casper (Norfolk, Mass./Thayer Academy) and Crystal King (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) also chipped in with goals for the Purple Knights.

Stonehill wasted little time taking control of the contest, as it scored the first eight markers of the game over the opening 14 minutes, including Green's first goal just 14-seconds in. Reilly added her first goal a minute later and then Green added a second under four minutes into the game before Lane netted her first of back-to-back goals as the Skyhawks potted four goals in the first 4:04.

Casper put Saint Michael's on the scoreboard with a free-position goal with 14 minutes left in the half. King added her goal with 9:11 to play for the Purple Knights, but Stonehill's lead was still 9-2. Faherty closed out the first half scoring with two straight goals at 6:31 and 4:55 to send the Skyhawks into halftime with an 11-2 advantage.

Stonehill scored the first three goals of the second half as Green and Sullivan scored goals around a Saint Michael's own goal to push its lead into double-figures (14-2) four minutes in. The teams traded goals the rest of the way with Stonehill holding its 12 goal lead to the final horn.

Stonehill (2-2, 1-0 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday when it visits unbeaten Assumption College for a Northeast-10 clash at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks are right back home on Saturday to host 11th-ranked University of New Haven for a league clash at noon. Saint Michael's (2-2, 0-1 NE-10) is scheduled to host Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday at 3 p.m.
