#10 Stonehill Claims Victory Over Queens, 15-9

Green nets season-high five goals to lead Skyhawks to first win

EASTON, Mass. (March 17, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, claimed its first win of the season with a 15-9 decision over Queens (N.Y.) College at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Seniors Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry), All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) and Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) led the way for Stonehill with an Irish flavor on Saint Patrick's Day. Green netted a season-high five goals to lead the Skyhawks scorers, while Reilly filled the stat sheet with three goals, a season-high eight draw controls and two ground balls. Sullivan contributed four points with two goals and a career-high matching two assists.

Sophomore Elizabeth Lane (Sandwich, Mass./Bishop Stang) scored a career-best three goals for Stonehill, adding three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Junior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) also collected three points with a goal and season-high two assists, while sophomore Brooke Rudden (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) chipped with a goal.

Junior Taylor Martello (Carle Place, N.Y.) scored six of Queens' nine goals on the afternoon. Senior Sarah Boucher (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) added a pair of goals, while sophomore Shannon Doody (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) scored the remaining Knights marker.

Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) posted four saves in goal for Stonehill, which finished with a 30-17 advantage in shots for the contest. Junior Kahli Evans (Adelaide, Australia) registered eight stops in goal for Queens. Stonehill finished with an 18-7 advantage in draw controls for the afternoon.

Stonehill scored the first six goals, including three by Green, over the opening 13 minutes of the first half to take control early. Queens used a 4-1 run, with two goals each by Martello and Boucher, to draw within 7-4 with 27-seconds left in the half. Reilly scored off a Sullivan feed with five seconds on the clock to send the Skyhawks into halftime with a four goal cushion (8-4).

Stonehill opened the second half with four goals in the first seven and a half minutes to claim an eight goal lead (12-4). Lane scored twice within a minute during that stretch, while Shannahan set up goals by Green and Reilly 1:20 apart as well. Queens closed back within five goals (12-7) with 19:59 still to play by netting three goals within a three minute span, including two from Martello.

Stonehill sealed the win with strong possession and netted three of the next four goals to regain a seven goal advantage (15-8) after Lane's third goal of the day with 1:23 left, as Sullivan netted a pair during the run.

Stonehill (1-2, 0-0 NE-10) is right back in action here at W.B. Mason Stadium tomorrow when it opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule against Saint Michael's College at 3 p.m. Queens (2-3, 0-0 ECC) opens its East Coast Conference slate at the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday.
