LaDuca and Chase lead Mocs to upset win
WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 2, 2013) – Florida Southern College, ranked 15th in the most recent Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, held off a second half rally to claim a 16-12 victory over 7th-ranked Stonehill College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Bryant Stadium tonight.
Senior Danielle LaDuca (Webster, N.Y.) and sophomore Caitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Holy Cross) combined for seven goals to lead Florida Southern to victory. LaDuca scored a team-high four goals, while Chase posted a game-high eight points with three goals and five assists. Senior Mara Mason (Rochester, N.Y.) and freshman Ashley Robertson (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) each added three goals for the Mocs, with Mason also dishing out two assists for five points. Sophomore Megan Asper (Parkton, Md./Hereford) contributed two goals and an assist for three points, while classmate Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) chipped in with a goal and seven draw controls.
Senior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and sophomore Mikayla Couch (Towaco, N.J./DePaul Catholic) both netted a team-high four goals for Stonehill. Senior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) tallied four points on two goals and two assists with six draw controls and three ground balls. Junior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) and sophomore Brooke Rudden (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) chipped in with a goal apiece.

Junior Katie Hammerer (California, Md./Leonardtown) preserved the win with 11 saves in the cage for Florida Southern. Stonehill held a 28-24 overall edge in shots, while draw controls were even at 15 apiece. Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) finished with one save in the Skyhawks cage.
Stonehill trailed by five (10-5) with a minute remaining in the first half, but got a Couch goal with 27-seconds left in the half to cut the gap to four at halftime. The Skyhawks scored the first three goals of the second half to close back within a goal (10-9) after a free position marker from Reilly less than four minutes in. Shannahan and Green also netted goals during that stretch.
Florida Southern responded with four of the next five goals to reclaim a four goal lead (14-10) after a Hoover score with 9:50 remaining. LaDuca had two of the Mocs goals during that stretch, while Mason collected assists on two of the markers. Couch scored a pair of goals for Stonehill down the stretch, but Florida Southern answered with goals each time to seal the victory.
The teams traded goals over the first six minutes of the game, with Reilly setting up both Stonehill goals during that stretch, before a 5-1 Florida Southern run opened a 7-3 lead after Chase's third goal of the run with 12:38 to play in the half. Chase also dished out an assist during that spell.
Free position goals by Reilly and Green pulled Stonehill back within two (7-5) with 7:18 left in the frame, but Florida Southern scored three goals in a two minute stretch to take its game-high five goal lead just before the intermission. LaDuca scored two of those three goals for the Mocs.
Stonehill (0-2, 0-0 NE-10) is off until Sunday, March 17, when it hosts Queens (N.Y.) College at W.B. Mason Stadium at noon. Florida Southern (3-1) hosts Gannon University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
