#7 Stonehill Bounces Back at #15 Queens, 19-9

Green nets seven goals, finishes with nine points to lead Skyhawks to win

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 22, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, bounced back from Saturday tough defeat to claim a 19-9 victory over 15th-ranked Queens (N.Y.) College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Hickox Field on the campus if LIU-C.W. Post today.

Junior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led Stonehill with a career-high matching seven goals to go with two assists for nine points, while junior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) added four goals and an assist for five points with three draw controls. Senior All-American Samantha Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./East Sachem) also totaled five points on three goals and two assists with five draw controls. Junior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) contributed three goals and an assist with 11 draw controls and three caused turnovers, while senior All-American Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) chipped in with two goals and an assist with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Freshman Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) registered 12 saves in goal for Stonehill as the Skyhawks finished with a 36-29 edge in shots, including 32-21 on goal. Stonehill converted 4-of-6 free-position shots, while Queens converted 2-of-7. The Skyhawks dominated the draw controls with a 21-9 advantage and was successful on 19-of-22 clear attempts, compared to 17-for-24 for the Knights. Junior Ellen Kleeman (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) posted 12 saves in goal over the final 53:23 in relief for Queens after sophomore Kahli Evans (Adelaide, Australia) stopped one shot over the opening 6:37.

Junior Heather Rosen (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) led Queens with four goals and an assist for five points, while senior Meghan Monahan (Amityville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) finished with two goals and an assist for three points, with three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Shannon Doody (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) chipped in a goal and assist with four draw controls.

Stonehill took immediate control by scoring six of the first seven goals and didn't look back as it built a 13-5 halftime lead. Green netted the first two goals of the game in the opening 1:26, including a free position goal just 28-seconds in. Rosen put Queens on the board just 14-seconds after Green's second goal and then the Skyhawks followed with a four goal run. Lynott and Green sparked the push, before Galligan added back-to-back markers for a 6-1 lead less than seven minutes into the contest.

Rosen scored her second goal of the match with 22:22 left in the frame and Stonehill followed with a five goal run to open an 11-2 lead with 13:37 to go in the half. Sullivan netted four of the Skyhawks five goals during that stretch, while Lynott contributed a goal and assist. The Knights scored three of the final five goals of the opening half, with Reilly netting a pair for Stonehill.

Green scored the first two goals of the second half to increase Stonehill's lead to ten (15-5) just over three minutes in. Rosen netted two straight goals for Queens, but a comeback wasn't in the works as the Skyhawks scored four of the final six goals, behind two goals and an assist from Green, to seal the victory.

Stonehill (12-3, 9-1 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday to host Assumption College for an NE-10 matchup on Senior Night at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. Queens (7-5, 1-3 ECC) hosts the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
