#2 Adelphi Quiets #6 Stonehill, 19-7

22 turnovers and Panthers ten first half goals sink Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (April 7, 2012) – Adelphi University, ranked second in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, scored ten first half goals and didn't look back in claiming a key 19-7 victory over 6th-ranked Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Senior Erica Devito (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) and sophomore Devan Crimi (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both totaled six points to lead Adelphi to its fourth straight win. Devito posted three goals and three assists to go with four draw controls, while Crimi registered two goals and four assists. Juniors Meg Brown (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and Sara Sangiorgio (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both netted four goals for the Panthers, while Brown also tallied four ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Senior Marissa Mills (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and freshman Danielle Jaycox (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) each chipped in with a pair of goals.

Sophomore Jordann Dempsey (Sparks, Md./Hereford) finished with ten saves in goal for Adelphi who posted a 39-24 advantage for shots in the contest, including a 31-17 break on goal. The Panthers took advantage of 22 Stonehill turnovers, while committing just ten themselves and finished with a 16-12 edge on draw controls. Adelphi was successful on 19-of-22 clear attempts, compared to 13-for-19 for the Skyhawks.

Junior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) led Stonehill with three goals to go with three ground balls. Classmate Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) added a pair of goals, while senior All-American Samantha Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./East Sachem) posted a goal, five draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Junior All-American Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark's School) took her first loss of the season in goal for Stonehill (6-1), finishing with six saves over the first 38:35. Freshman Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) stopped six shots over the final 21:25.

Jaycox put Adelphi in front early with her first goal 25-seconds into the contest off the opening draw. Devito and Brown, assisted by Crimi, added goals as the Panthers netted the first three goals of the contest in the opening 3:13. Stonehill got a goal back when Lynott scored on a free position shot with a man advantage with 24:24 to play in the opening half.

Adelphi scored seven of the next eight goals to open a 10-2 lead after Mills capped a 5-0 Panthers run with her first marker with 4:29 left in the half. Sangiorgio scored back-to-back goals and had three markers in all during the 7-1 stretch, while Devito posted a goal and three assists and Crimi contributed a goal and assist. Stonehill pulled two goals back to go into halftime trailing by just six (10-4) following goals from Green and Sullivan in the final 3:36 of the half.

The Sullivan marker was her first of three-straight goals as she drew Stonehill within 10-6 as she added a pair of goals, the second assisted by senior All-American Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional), in the opening minute of the second half.

Adelphi, however, reeled off the next nine goals to resume control and seal the win. Eight different Panthers scored during that run, with Mills netting a pair and Crimi registering a goal and two assists. Brown started the run with her goal 1:15 after Sullivan's third and then Mills and Jaycox added goals to put the Panthers up 13-6 with 21:25 to play, halting the Stonehill rally.

Stonehill (9-2, 7-1 NE-10) is back in action on Thursday when it hosts 11th-ranked Merrimack College for a Northeast-10 matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. Adelphi (9-1, 6-1 NE-10) visits Assumption College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
