Reilly, Anderson power Stonehill through to semifinals

EASTON, Mass. (May 4, 2011) – Third-seeded Stonehill College, ranked seventh in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II national poll, rolled through the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship with a 19-4 victory over sixth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University this afternoon at home.

Stonehill (15-3, 10-2 NE-10) advances to Saturday’s semifinal round to face second-seeded and second-ranked Le Moyne College at 3:30 p.m. Top-seeded and top-ranked Adelphi University will serve as host of the semifinals and championship game, to be played Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Sophomore Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) led all scorers with four goals, and senior Hannah Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) tallied a game-high six points on two goals and four assists. Juniors Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and Sam Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./East Sachem) and sophomore Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) added three goals apiece.

Sophomore Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark's School) made 10 saves in goal for the Skyhawks, and senior Emily Kerwin (Bristol, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) led the defensive effort with five caused turnovers and five ground balls as Stonehill committed only six turnovers all afternoon to Southern New Hampshire’s 24. The Penmen got two goals apiece from freshman Phoebe Clark (Concord, N.H./Concord) and junior Emily Mongeau (Westborough, Mass./Westborough), and 16 saves from junior goalkeeper Hannah Moriarty (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford).

The Skyhawks, who needed a second-half rally to get past the Penmen in their regular-season matchup, put the game away early this time with 10 first-half goals. Reilly scored all four of hers in the opening half, twice set up by Anderson as Stonehill pulled away to a 10-1 lead at halftime. Clark got Southern New Hampshire on the board with a goal in the fifth minute, but the Penmen would not convert again until Mongeau netted a pair early in the second half.

Stonehill outshot the Penmen 25-9 in the second half to rack up a season-high 50 shots overall, and kept up the offensive pressure as Anderson and Lynott each scored twice and freshman Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) added a goal and an assist. Moore held the Penmen scoreless on five free-position attempts, and senior Christine Lanagan (North Dartmouth, Mass./Bishop Stang) forced a pair of late turnovers as Stonehill opened a 15-goal gap, capped by a last strike from Green as time expired.
