#6 Stonehill Rolls Past Southern New Hampshire, 21-10

Galligan leads the way with six goals and
assist
EASTON, Mass. (March 31, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, outscored Southern New Hampshire University 13-3 in the second half in rolling to a 21-10 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women’s lacrosse action at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.
Sophomore Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) led Stonehill with a seven-point outing as she netted six goals to go with an assist on the afternoon, adding four ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control. Seniors Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and Liza Gross (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) both contributed five points for the Skyhawks. Ladino collected four goals and an assist, while Gross had three goals and two assists with nine draw controls and four ground balls. Junior Hannah Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) chipped in with three goals and an assist.

Freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark’s School) preserved the win for Stonehill with a season-high 19 saves, including 11 stops on 14 shots on goal in the second half, adding six ground balls and one caused turnover. Sophomore Hannah Moriarty (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) stopped 15 shots in goal for Southern New Hampshire, including ten in the second half. Stonehill finished with a 43-34 advantage in shots for the match, including 34-33 on goal, out-shooting SNHU 25-17 in the second half. The Skyhawks dominated the draws in the second half, 13-4, to finish with a 19-14 edge for the contest.
Senior Carole Lee (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) led Southern New Hampshire with four goals, while junior Sherry Darrell (Bow, N.H./Bow) dished four assists. Sophomore Emily Mongeau (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) netted three goals for the Penmen, adding six ground balls, four draw controls and six caused turnovers. Classmate Sara Halbich (Salem, N.H./Salem) chipped in with two goals.

Leading 8-7 at halftime, Stonehill stormed out of halftime with five goals in the first 7:08 of the second half. Anderson started the run with the first two goals in an eight-second span just over two minutes in. Ladino also scored a pair of goals in that stretch.
Southern New Hampshire netted three of the next five goals to stay within 15-10 after a Lee goal, assisted by Darrell, with six minutes left in regulation. Stonehill broke the game open with six unanswered goals to seal the victory. Freshmen Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) both netted two goals in the closing run, while Gross notched a goal and assist.
Southern New Hampshire scored the first three goals, two from Lee, and led 4-2 after a free-position goal from Mongeau with 18:19 left in the first half. Stonehill scored five of the next six goals to take a 7-5 lead after an unassisted goal from Gross with 4:47 left in the half. She and Galligan each netted two goals in that stretch. Mongeau and Halbich sandwiched an unassisted goal from Galligan in the final two minutes of the half to draw within 8-7 at the break.
Stonehill (4-1, 3-1 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it heads to Long Island to face 8th-ranked Dowling College at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Thursday, April 8, to host Saint Anselm College at 7 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (3-3, 2-1 NE-10) visits Molloy College on Friday at noon.
