Defense holds Ravens to two goals each half, Galligan collects seven points

EASTON, Mass. (April 10, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, rolled to its seventh-straight win with a 15-4 victory over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference women’s lacrosse action at Sodexo Field this afternoon.

Stonehill’s defense held Franklin Pierce to a season-low four goals and just 11 shots on goal, with freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark’s School) needing to make just seven saves (five first half) to preserve the win. The Skyhawks finished with a 46-17 advantage in shots for the match, including 33-11 on goal. The defense also forced 25 Franklin Pierce turnovers. During its current seven game winning streak, the Stonehill defense has allowed double-digit goals just twice and has posted a 7.00 goals against average, including a 4.67 GAA in three wins this week.

Sophomore Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) led Stonehill with seven points on three goals and a season-best four assists, while collecting six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Hannah Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) netted a game-high five goals, while sophomore Samantha Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./East Sachem) posted three goals and an assist for four points. Freshman Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) chipped in with two goals.

Sophomore Mary Kate Stille (North Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) led Franklin Pierce with two goals and two assists for four points. Juniors Ashley Moirano (Vero Beach, Fla./South Burlington (Vt.) and Jordan Baillargeon (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) each chipped in with a goal, while Baillargeon also collected a game-high nine draw controls.

Sophomore Jillian Bolduc (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane Regional) finished with 18 saves in goal for the Ravens, including 11 in the second half.

Anderson netted the first two goals of the contest to give Stonehill the lead 4:39 into the first half. Stille scored off a feed from sophomore Christine McKay (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) with 23:01 left in the half, but Stonehill reeled off six-straight goals to open an 8-1 lead after Lynott’s second goal of the game with 7:33 left in the half. She had two goals in all during that run, as did Anderson, while Galligan contributed a goal and three assists.

Both teams netted goals in the final five minutes of the half and Franklin Pierce scored the first marker of the second when Stille set up Moirano 1:49 in to make the score 9-3. Stonehill then put the game away with another 6-0 run, capped by Galligan’s 30th goal of the season with 3:32 remaining in regulation – her second goal of that run, while also dishing an assist. Baillargeon capped the scoring, assisted by Stille, for the Ravens with five seconds left on the clock.

Stonehill (8-1, 6-1 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University at 7 p.m. Franklin Pierce (3-7, 1-5 NE-10) travels to Bentley University on Monday night at 7 p.m.
