Galligan leads Skyhawks to fourth-straight win with five goals

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (April 3, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, held eighth-ranked Dowling College to its lowest goal output of the season in posting an 11-8 victory in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Golden Lions Field this afternoon.

Sophomore Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) led Stonehill with five goals, four ground balls and a caused turnover, while classmate Sam Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./East Sachem) added a goal and assist for two points, to go with five ground balls, a draw control and three caused turnovers. The Skyhawks also got two goals from freshman Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry).

Freshman Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark’s School) limited Dowling to a season-low eight goals, making ten saves to go with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Rachael Goldstein (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) finished with 14 saves for Dowling. The Skyhawks posted a 29-24 advantage in shots for the contest.

Grad student Stephanie Cotter (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) led Dowling with three goals, while sophomore Brooke Whitkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) added a goal and assist.

Stonehill gained the early advantage in the contest with a pair by Galligan and a third by senior Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) to take a 3-0 lead in the opening eight minutes. Dowling scored five of the next six goals to take a 5-4 lead after a free-position goal from sophomore Kimberly Harrington (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) with 2:10 left in the half. Whitkowski played a role in each of the Golden Lions first two goals with her goal and assist.

Stonehill knotted the score at 5-5 at halftime with Galligan’s third goal of the match with 1:10 left before the break. The Skyhawks regained the lead with a free-position goal from Lynott 2:52 into the second half. Dowling tied the match again with Cotter’s second of the afternoon with 21:41 to play. The Skyhawks netted the next two goals to regain the lead for good with goals from Galligan and Green.

Cotter pulled Dowling back within a goal (8-7) with 15:30 to play, but Stonehill scored three of the game’s last four markers to seal the win. Galligan, Green and senior Liza Gross (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) contributed goals for the Skyhawks in the decisive run.

Stonehill (5-1, 3-1 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it visits rival Bentley University at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Thursday to host Saint Anselm College at 7 p.m. Dowling (5-3, 1-0 ECC) visits West Chester University on Thursday at 4 p.m.
