#7 Stonehill Cruises at American International, 23-8

Galligan nets seven points to lead Skyhawks to ninth-straight win

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 17, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, cruised to its ninth-straight win with a 23-8 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference women’s lacrosse action at Ronald J. Abdow Field this afternoon.

Sophomore midfielder Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) led Stonehill with seven points on four goals and three assists. Sophomore Sam Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and freshmen Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) all contributed five points on the afternoon for the Skyhawks. Lynott and Reilly finished with four goals and an assist, while Sullivan posted three goals and two assists.

Freshman Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) netted three goals off the bench for Stonehill, while senior Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) chipped in two goals and an assist for three points.

Senior Katie Warner (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) led American International with three goals and an assist. Sophomore Courtney Szawlowski (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) added two goals and two assists, while sister Ashleigh Szawlowski (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) chipped in with two goals.

Freshman Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark’s School) finished with three saves in goal for Stonehill, while junior Gina Gallo (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) stopped 25 shots in goal for American International. The Skyhawks finished with a 52-17 advantage in shots for the contest, including 48-11 on goal.

Stonehill gained an early two goal lead on goals by Galligan and junior Hannah Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) just 12-seconds apart in the opening 3:04. American International fought back and evened the score at 2-2 with goals from Courtney Szawlowski and junior Alex Hudyka (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) with 18:40 remaining in the first half.

Stonehill regained the lead just over a minute later with Lynott’s first goal of the match with 17:34 left that sparked a 5-0 run that put the Skyhawks in control. Sullivan scored two goals in that run. Stonehill carried a 12-5 lead into halftime by closing the opening frame out with a 5-2 stretch in the closing 8:51, led by two goals and two assists from Galligan.

American International scored three of the first four goals in the second half, two by Warner, to close within 13-8 with 25:50 to play. Stonehill stopped the Yellow Jackets there and netted ten unanswered goals to close out the contest. Reilly scored four times during the closing run, while Sullivan contributed a goal and two assists.

Stonehill (10-1, 8-1 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Assumption College for Senior Night at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. American International (7-5, 2-5 NE-10) visits Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
