#1 Adelphi Tops #9 Stonehill in NE-10 Opener, 16-9
Panthers win inaugural NE-10 contest behind Fey’s six points
EASTON, Mass. (March 20, 2010) – Defending NCAA Division II National Champions Adelphi University, ranked first in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, posted a 16-9 victory over 9th-ranked Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference women’s lacrosse opener for both at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon. It marks the inaugural NE-10 contest for Adelphi who is in its first year as a Conference member.
Junior Elizabeth Fey (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) led Adelphi to its fourth win to start the season with four goals and two assists for six points. Sophomore Marissa Mills (Islip, N.Y./Islip) added three goals and an assist for four points, while junior Michelle Ceraso (Massapequa, N.Y./Kellenberg) netted three goals for the Panthers. Sophomore Erica Devito (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) posted a goal and two assists for three points. Sophomore Claire Peterson (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and freshman Demmianne Cook (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) both chipped in with a pair of goals.
Junior Hannah Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) led Stonehill with two goals and an assist for three points. Sophomore Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) scored two goals for the Skyhawks, while senior Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) chipped in with a goal and assist for two points.
Senior Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) preserved the win in goal for Adelphi with 14 saves (nine second half), while freshman Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark’s School) posted 11 stops in goal for Stonehill. Adelphi finished with a 37-29 advantage in shots for the match, including a 27-23 edge in shots on goal. The Skyhawks were hampered by 22 turnovers, compared to 15 for the Panthers.

Adelphi took control of the game with four goals in the opening five minutes of the second half after holding an 8-5 lead at the intermission. Fey had a goal and assist during that run, with her goal 4:40 into the second half giving the Panthers a 12-5 lead.
Stonehill closed the gap to 12-8 after a goal from senior Liza Gross (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) with 17:26 to play, but Adelphi held the Skyhawks there and scored three goals of its own to gain a 15-8 lead with just 4:34 remaining. Peterson scored her two goals during that stretch.
Adelphi never trailed, opening a 2-0 lead 2:06 into the game on goals from Fey and Cook. Stonehill cut the lead in half with an unassisted tally from sophomore Sam Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) with 24:22 left in the first half.
The teams traded goals before Adelphi gained some breathing room by netting five of six goals over a seven minute span to open an 8-3 lead after a marker by senior Allison Tumulty (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) with 3:11 left in the half. Mills had two goals in that stretch, while Fey added a goal and assist. Stonehill closed within 8-5 at halftime on goals from Ladino and freshman Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) in the last minute of the frame.
Stonehill (1-1, 0-1 NE-10) is back in action on Thursday, when it hosts Merrimack College for an NE-10 matchup at 3:30 p.m. Adelphi (4-0, 1-0 NE-10) visits Assumption College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
