Kelly's Ten Total Points Puts Stonehill Past Merrimack, 19-4
Easton, Mass. - Michelle Kelly (Mendham, N.J./W. Morris Mendham) erupted for seven goals and three assists in Stonehill's 19-4 win over the Merrimack College Warriors (0-1, 0-1 Northeast-10). The Skyhawks (2-0, 1-0 Northeast-10) took an early lead and never relinquished it on their way to claiming their first Conference victory of 2008. The win extends the College's Northeast-10 Conference unbeaten streak to 69 straight games.
Unlike last week's match up against Molloy College, the Skyhawks came out on fire against the Warriors. A lone goal from Amanda Simeone was all Merrimack could muster against a Skyhawks' offense that put up 10 goals in the opening half.
Kelly, a junior, did not wait long to scored her first marker of the season to put the Skyhawks up 2-0. She finished the half with three goals and three assists. Kristin Darrell (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) continued her assault Stonehill's record books, with two early goals to spot the host team a 3-0 advantage.
The Skyhawks' first half was highlighted by five goals in five minutes of play. Mary Maloney (Great River, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored twice during this time, adding to her four-goal performance in the season opener. Liza Gross (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker), Jackie Ladino (N. Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and Michelle Salmon (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) each added markers as well to make the score 10-1 at the half.
Freshman Hannah Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) scored for the second consecutive game early in the second half. The score is Anderson's third of the season.
Senior Christa LaRocco (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) finished her night with four assists for the Purple and White. Freshman Devin O'Leary (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) also helped out, assisting in two late scores.
Kelly found the back of the net four more times in the second
half - bringing her total to seven goals and three first-half
assists. The Skyhawks finished with a 15-goal lead while
out-shooting the Warriors, 32-9.
Senior captain Amanda McGeachey (Saco,
Maine/Thornton Academy) had another gem in between the pipes.
One week after being named the Northeast-10 Conference
Goaltender of the Week, McGeachey shut down the Warriors' offense,
allowing only four goals. Amanda improved her record to
2-0, 22-2 life time.
The Skyhawks will return to action Saturday when they host Saint Anselm in another Northeast-10 showdown. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
