June 16, 2005

Stonehill College junior women’s lacrosse standout Erin Acone, who has earned three All-America honors for her play on the field during her career, has added an accolade for her work in the classroom after being named today to the 2004-2005 ESPN The Magazine College Division Women’s At-Large National Academic All-America team in a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

A native of Bow, N.H. and a graduate of Bow High School, Acone is one of 45 individuals to be named to the prestigious Academic All-America squad, as she earned third team honors for her efforts. An Early Childhood Education major at Stonehill, Acone sports a 3.24 cumulative grade point average and becomes the fifth Academic All-America honoree in school history, joining Don Prohovich ’80 (baseball), Kevin Broderick ’93 (football), Julie Stockwell ’00 (basketball) and Amy Bartlett ’02 (lacrosse) in that exclusive club, as Acone, Stockwell and Bartlett hold the distinction of earning both All-America and Academic All-America accolades in their respective sports during their careers.

Acone has enjoyed a brilliant career on the field for Head Coach Michael Daly’s squad, as she has amassed 166 goals and 55 assists for 221 points and is one of four players in Stonehill history to eclipse the 200-career point plateau. One of two Division II players to be included on the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy watch list in 2005, Erin is the two-time reigning Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year and a three-time IWLCA Division II first-team All-America. The 2005 IWLCA Offensive Midfielder of the Year, Acone led the Chieftains in scoring with 70 goals and 19 assists for 89 points and helped lead Stonehill to its second NCAA Division II national championship in three seasons in 2005 with a perfect 21-0 overall record, as the Chieftains took the title with a 13-10 championship match victory over West Chester.

In addition to her Academic All-America honor, Acone was also named to the Stonehill Athletic Director’s honor roll as well as the 2005 Northeast-10 Women’s Lacrosse Academic All-Conference team for her work in the classroom.

During the course of her career, Acone has helped lead Stonehill to an overall mark of 52-5 (.912), as the Chieftains have captured three Northeast-10 regular season and tournament titles along the way. In addition to taking the 2005 NCAA Division II national title, Erin helped lead Stonehill to the NCAA national crown during her freshman campaign in 2003, as the Chieftains posted a then school-record 17 wins and posted a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over Longwood in the 2003 national championship match.
