Women's Golf Competes in Inaugural Event at Penmen Labor Day Classic

Skyhawks officially underway despite completing nine holes today

Jylkka struck the first shot in program history with her opening tee shot this morning.

HANOVER, N.H. (September 3, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's golf program's inaugural season is officially underway, despite today's opening round of the Penmen Labor Day Classic, hosted by Southern New Hampshire University, at Hanover Country Club being cut to nine holes because of weather.

Under cold and rainy conditions at Hanover CC, Stonehill freshmen Katelyn Jylkka (Portland, Connecticut/East Catholic) and Francesca Feola (Bellingham, Massachusetts/Bellingham), as well as sophomore Jennifer Kornacki (Simsbury, Connecticut/Simsbury) made program history by opening play for the women's golf program, introduced as the College's 21st varsity sport last October.

"It was a historic and exciting moment to watch Stonehill tee it up for the first time," said head coach Nick Crovetti. "I am happy and proud of the founding three members."

Jylkka had the honor of recording the first shot in the program's history as she went on to card a round of 49 this morning and sits 25th in the field at the midway point of the first round. The teams will round out the tournament with 27 holes on Monday.

Merrimack College leads the event through nine with Krystal Knight and Alessandra Ricigliano each posting one-under-par scores of 36 halfway through the opening round. Host Southern New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce University, Post University and The College of Saint Rose are also competing at the event with Stonehill.

The Penmen Invitational concludes on Monday morning with the remainder of the first round, followed by the regularly scheduled second round starting at 9 a.m. Following its first event in program history this weekend, Stonehill will be back in action for its first trip to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, hosted by Merrimack, at Haverhill Country Club, Sunday and Monday, September 24 and 25.
