Raymond double-double leads Skyhawks to seventh-straight win

EASTON, Mass. (February 15, 2020) – Stonehill College, receiving votes in this week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II poll and ranked No. 3 in the D2SIDA East Region poll, closed out its seventh-straight win in the fourth quarter for a 62-53 decision over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.

Kayla Raymond Sophomore, Forward: Second double-double of the season with 18 points (6-for-14, 5-for-6 FTs), including 12 in the first half, and 12 rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots.

Gabrielle Reuter Senior, Forward: 11 points (4-for-8), eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

Jennifer Worden Junior, Guard: 11 points (3-for-4), three rebounds, two assists and a block.

Emily Bramanti Sophomore, Guard: 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot and steal.

Assumption

Temi Falayi Junior, Forward: Double-double of 10 points (4-for-11) and 19 rebounds (10 offensive), four blocked shots.

Emme Poulin Sophomore, Guard: 12 points (5-for-14).

Brianna Capacchione Senior, Guard: 9 points, four rebounds and a steal.

How it Happened

    After shooting 1-for-13 from three-point range over the first three quarters, Stonehill connected on 4-of-8 in the fourth to help close out the win.
  • Stonehill led by 11 (28-17) at the half, but Assumption stormed back to grab its first lead of the game in the third. The Greyhounds scored the first six of the second half, including four by Falayi, to pull within five (28-23) after a Capacchione basket two minutes in.
  • Reuter scored Stonehill's first basket of the half on its next possession, but Assumption extended the run to 14-2 to take the lead (31-30) on a Falayi layup midway through the quarter.
  • Stonehill reclaimed the lead (33-31) with three-straight points (all from the line) by Bramanti, but Assumption followed with the next seven points to take a five-point lead (38-33) on two free-throws by freshman Monica Spain with 2:21 remaining.
  • Assumption carried a two-point lead (40-38) into the final quarter and stretched it to four (42-38) when Poulin opened the frame with a layup. Stonehill responded with an 8-2 spurt, sparked by three-pointers from sophomore Sophie Glidden and then senior Kelsey Shaw to reclaim the lead.
  • Junior Meghan Reen leveled the game (46-46) for Assumption with six minutes remaining, but Stonehill took over from there, using a 12-4 run, sparked by a second Shaw triple, to grab an eight point lead (58-50) after two Bramanti free-throws with 58-seconds to go that sealed the win.
  • Stonehill jumped out to a nine-point lead (13-4) after a Bramanti layup with four minutes remaining in the first quarter on the way to its 11-point (28-17) halftime cushion.
  • Stonehill held Assumption to just 17 first half points, compared to allowing 21 points in the third quarter, on 21.2% shooting (7-for-33).

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill are now winners of a season-high seven straight and 11 of 12 since the New Year. It matches NE10 Southwest Division leaders Adelphi University for the longest current win streak in the Conference.
  • Stonehill maintains its one game lead in the loss column ahead of both Saint Anselm College, idle today, and rival Bentley University with two games to play.
  • Raymond's second double-double of the year is the fourth of her career. Stonehill is 8-1 when she leads in rebounding this season (18-4 career).

Stonehill (18-5, 14-3 NE10) is back on the road on Wednesday, when it opens its final week of the regular season at Saint Michael's College at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks are back at Merkert Gym next Saturday, February 22, to host Southern New Hampshire University for Senior Day and close out the regular season at 1:30 p.m. Assumption (13-12, 7-10 NE10) visits Bentley University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
