Carter leads four Skyhawks in double-figures with career-high 25 points
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (November 8, 2019) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 5 in the D2SIDA East Region preseason poll and receiving votes in both national polls, opened its 2019-20 season with a 77-70 triumph over Daemen College in non-conference women's basketball action on day one of the 2019 Redhawks Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College, at the Voller Athletic Center tonight.
Senior guard Grace Carter led four from Stonehill in double-figures, leading three who posted career-high scoring nights. She netted 18 of her game-high 25 points in the first half, connecting on 7-of-12 three-pointers, including 6-of-8 in the opening 20 minutes, adding a career-best six rebounds and two assists. Classmate Morgan O'Brien added a career-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, and four rebounds, while sophomore Sophie Glidden also registered a career-best 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, with a career and team-high seven rebounds off the bench.
Senior Gabrielle Reuter rounded out Stonehill's double-figure scorers with ten points, seven rebounds and three assists. Classmate Kelsey Shaw chipped in with a career-high matching seven assists.

Junior Caroline White led three from Daemen with 12 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the floor, to go with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior Tiara Filbert totaled 12 points, five rebounds and three steals, while sophomore Katie Titus rounded out the 12-point scorers for the Wildcats. Senior Jordan Heinold led three with ten points for Daemen, adding five rebounds, three assists and three steals, while postgrad Ashli Jeune and junior Autumn Buchsenschutz each chipped in ten points.
Stonehill looked poised to run away with the game, leading by as much as 14 (19-5) after a Carter triple with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. She scored nine points in the frame as the Skyhawks took a 12-point lead (22-10) into the second. Stonehill's lead grew to 17 (29-12) after a Glidden layup four minutes into the second quarter. Daemen responded and trimmed its deficit to nine (32-23) after a layup from White with three minutes remaining in the first half. Carter answered with a three-pointer at the other end, but White added another basket and freshman Marina Maerkl split two free-throws to pull the Wildcats back within nine (35-29) with 1:39 remaining. Carter and Glidden followed by draining back to back three-pointers to send the Skyhawks into halftime with a 15-point cushion (41-26).
Stonehill restored its 16-point lead (56-40) after a free throw from freshman Erin Donlan late in the third quarter. The Skyhawks lead was still 13 (69-56) following a Reuter layup with three minutes to go, but Daemen mounted a furious rally to close within two possessions (73-68) after a Filbert three with 27-seconds left. Stonehill held, though, as Glidden and Shaw both drained free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE10) is right back in action tomorrow night, when it meets host Roberts Wesleyan on day two of the Redhawks Tip-Off Classic at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks first home game is Saturday, November 23, when it hosts Saint Michael's College for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Merkert Gymnasium at 1:30 p.m. Daemen (0-1, 0-0 ECC) faces Franklin Pierce University on day two of the Tip-Off Classic tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
