Easton, Massachusetts, freshman recognized after leading Skyhawks to regional semifinals
EASTON, Mass. (March 19, 2019) – Stonehill College freshman Kayla Raymond was named to the NCAA Division II East Regional All-Tournament team by the attending media at the conclusion of the East Regional, won by Saint Anselm College, last night at Bobby Morgan Arena on the campus of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
Raymond averaged 19 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.5 blocked shots and a steal per game for Stonehill in its two NCAA Tournament games this weekend. She made 55.2-percent of her shots from the field (16-for-29), including 5-of-12 (41.7%) three-pointers, over the two games. Raymond led sixth-seeded Stonehill to an 86-77 victory over third-seeded and No. 10/19 Jefferson University in the first round by scoring 13 of her 22 points in the second half as she finished shooting 9-for-12 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from three-point distance, with eight rebounds and two assists. She followed that up with 16 points, including 14 in the first half, on 7-of-17 shooting, with seven rebounds, three assists, five blocked shots and two steals in Saturday's 59-50 setback to seventh-seeded Saint Anselm in the regional semifinals.
Raymond was joined on the East Regional All-Tournament team by Le Moyne College's Makayla Roberts (Most Outstanding Player), Shannon Ryan and Peyton Steinman from Saint Anselm and Irisa Ye from USciences.
Raymond, the eighth NE10 Rookie of the Year in program history and first freshman in program history to earn All-NE10 honors with her second team selection, finished her freshman season scoring in double-figures in 22 of her 26 games played, including eight games with 20-plus points, netting a season-high 32 points at Merrimack College on February 10. She posted a pair of double-doubles, securing a season-best 11 rebounds twice. Raymond is one of just nine freshmen in NE10 history to earn All-Conference honors.
Raymond averaged a team-high 16.2 points on 49.3 percent shooting, including 38.7% (41-for-106) from three-point distance, while shooting 79.5% (31-39) from the free-throw line. She also contributed 5.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.8 blocked shots and a steal in 24.2 minutes per game. Her 420 points this season finished second all-time among freshmen in Stonehill history, behind only Stonehill and NE10 Hall of Famer Sue Patchett, '97, who netted 450 points as a freshman in 1993-94. Raymond ranks eighth among NE10 scoring leaders, 13th in field goal percentage, seventh in three-point field goal percentage and sixth in blocks per game.
Stonehill (20-10, 14-7 NE10) finished second in the NE10's Northeast Division this season and earned the program's 25th NCAA Tournament bid, reaching the 20-win mark for the 26th time. The Skyhawks are the only program to appear in all 38 NE10 women's basketball tournaments.
