Dolphins used second quarter surge to fuel 11th-straight win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (January 23, 2019) – Le Moyne College, receiving votes in both Division II national polls and ranked No. 4 in this week's D2SIDA East Region poll, outscored Stonehill College, ranked No. 7 in the region, by 15 points in the second quarter to fuel a 69-51 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at Ted Grant Court tonight.

Postgrad Corinne Poitevien and junior Makayla Roberts combined for 37 points and led a trio of Le Moyne players in double figures in the win. Poitevien netted 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, to go with seven rebounds and two steals, while Roberts added 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 4-for-7 from three-point distance, with five boards and three assists. Freshman Jenna Zimmerman rounded out the Dolphins in double-figures with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots and two steals, while sophomore Liz Millea chipped in eight points and three boards off the bench.

Senior Maty Diabate led three Stonehill players in double figures by scoring ten of her 12 points off the bench in the second half on 6-of-10 shooting, with five rebounds and two assists. Juniors Gabrielle Reuter and Grace Carter followed with 11 points apiece. Reuter also grabbed three rebounds, while Carter shot 4-for-5 from the field, including all three three-pointers, with two assists.

Stonehill finished shooting 44.9-percent from the field (22-for-49), including 62.5% (15-for-24) in the second half, but outside of its three double-figure scorers, the remainder of the team was a combined 7-for-24 (29%). Le Moyne broke open a one point game (14-13) after a quarter of play by outscoring Stonehill 19-4 in the second to take a 33-17 lead into halftime.

After trading baskets within the first two minutes of the second quarter, Le Moyne broke a combined two minute scoring lull by the two teams by scoring 13-straight points to open a 15-point lead (30-15) after a Zimmerman three-pointer with 1:26 remaining in the half. Poitevien led the run with six points, while Zimmerman added five. Reuter ended the run and a seven-minute Skyhawks scoring drought with a layup, but Millea capped the first half with a three to send the Dolphins into the break with a 16-point lead.

Le Moyne was able to stretch its lead to 21 points (45-24) after a layup by freshman Cameron Tooley 3:16 into the third quarter. Stonehill closed within 15 (47-32) after a Carter three with 4:20 to go in the frame, but the Dolphins outscored the Skyhawks 11-4 over the remainder of the quarter, keyed by three-pointers from Roberts, Millea and sophomore Madison Shetrom, to carry a 22-point margin (58-36) into the fourth. Roberts opened the fourth with a layup to extend the hosts lead to a game-high 24 and the Dolphins cruised the rest of the way to their 11th-straight win.

Stonehill (12-5, 7-4 NE10) continues its three game road trip on Saturday at the University of New Haven, ranked ninth in the region, at 1:30 p.m. The Skyhawks do not return home until Saturday, February 2, when they host Adelphi University for their Alumnae Game at 1:30 p.m. Le Moyne (15-2, 8-2 NE10) visits regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
