Assumption Battles Past #19 Women's Basketball, 55-49

Greyhounds take defensive struggle with balanced effort

EASTON, Mass. (December 5, 2018) – Assumption College took advantage of 20 Stonehill College turnovers in picking up a 55-49 victory over the Skyhawks, ranked 19th in this week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II poll, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium tonight.

Senior Jordan Hawkins paced a balanced Assumption effort with a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, shooting 5-for-9 from the field. Sophomore Temi Falayi added nine points on 4-of-7 shooting, and four rebounds, while junior Brianna Capacchione totaled eight points, seven boards, three assists and three steals.

Junior Gabrielle Reuter led Stonehill with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting, scoring 12 in the second half, to go with five rebounds, an assist and blocked shot. Classmate Grace Carter added ten points, five rebounds and two steals, while senior Tayler Wornum totaled seven points and seven boards in 13 minutes off the bench. Senior Maty Diabate chipped in seven points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Assumption outscored Stonehill 24-12 in points off turnovers for the night, limiting the Skyhawks to 37.7-percent shooting, including 3-for-18 (16.7%) from three-point distance. Stonehill trailed by nine (39-30) after a bucket inside from Falayi capped a 10-0 Assumption run with 1:36 remaining in the third quarter.

Stonehill pulled within one (39-38) after a Wornum basket less than three minutes into the fourth, but Assumption restored a six point cushion (44-38) after a layup from senior Morgan O'Donnell with 5:56 to play. The Skyhawks rallied again, using a Reuter basket and a layup from sophomore Jennifer Worden to draw within two (44-42) with 4:36 to go.

Stonehill had the ball with a chance to draw even, or take the lead, but committed a turnover inside. Assumption sealed their fourth-straight win from there, scoring the next six points, including four by Hawkins to restore its eight point lead (50-42) with 1:38 remaining. The Greyhounds clinching run grew to 10-1 for a game-high 11-point lead (54-43) after two free-throws by Capacchione with 24-seconds left.

Stonehill (7-2, 4-2 NE10) is right back in action here at Merkert Gym on Saturday, as it continues its five-game home stand, which will stretch throughout the remainder of December, against Southern New Hampshire University, ranked ninth in this week's D2SIDA East Region poll, for its Purple & White Game at 1:30 p.m. Assumption (6-3, 4-2 NE10) is off until Saturday, December 15, when it hosts Caldwell College at 1:30 p.m.
