Millan leads Black Bears with 30 points, six rebounds, six steals

BANGOR, Maine (November 3, 2018) – NCAA Division I University of Maine shot 50-percent from the floor and took advantage of 21 visitor turnovers to pick up an 85-46 victory over Stonehill College, ranked No. 19 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and D2SIDA Division II preseason polls, in a women's basketball preseason exhibition at the Cross Insurance Center this afternoon.

Junior Bianca Millan led Maine with a game-high 30 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the floor, including 5-for-9 from three-point distance, to go with six rebounds, six steals and two assists. Sophomore Dor Saar added 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 5-for-7 from beyond the arc, with four boards, seven assists and three steals. Senior Tanesha Sutton contributed 13 points, six rebounds, three assist and two steals, while senior Maddy McVicar chipped in 13 points off the bench for the Black Bears.

Freshman Kayla Raymond scored a team-high eight points for Stonehill, with two rebounds, while junior Kelsey Shaw contributed five points, five rebounds and six assists. Senior Maty Diabate added seven points in 14 minutes off the bench for the Skyhawks who claimed a 68-49 win over Maine here a year ago.

Maine shot 50-percent from the floor for the contest and turned 21 Stonehill turnovers into 31 points the other way, with the Black Bears also connecting on 12-of-26 three-pointers (46.2%). The Skyhawks shot just 36.4% from the floor, including 2-for-12 (16.7%) from three-point range.

Stonehill, coming off a 29-4 campaign a year ago to reach the Division II Elite Eight after claiming the NE10 Northeast Division regular season championship with a 20-1 mark, scored first with Raymond hitting a jumper on its first possession, but Maine claimed control with the next eight points from four different players on its way to a 21-11 lead after a quarter of play. The Black Bears extended the lead to 19 at the break (40-21) and then outscored the Skyhawks 28-14 in the third quarter to break the game open. Maine made 9-of-15 shots from the floor in the third quarter, including a white-hot 7-of-9 three-pointers.

Stonehill (0-0, 0-0 NE10), ranked No. 3 in the D2SIDA East Region preseason poll, opens its 2018-19 season on Friday, November 9, at Wilmington (Del.) University for the Wilmington Tip-Off Classic at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks home opener is the following Wednesday, November 14, against rival Bentley University, ranked No. 8 in both Division II national polls, at Merkert Gym at 5:30 p.m. Maine (0-0, 0-0 AE) hosts University of Toledo on November 10 at 1 p.m.
