Scituate, Massachusetts, senior earns second All-America award of the season
D2CCA Division II All-America Teams
EASTON, Mass. (March 26, 2018) – Stonehill College senior guard Kelly Martin (Scituate, Massachusetts/Scituate) has picked up her second All-America award of the year with her selection to the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) Women's All-America third team, as selected by sports information directors in Division II across the country.
Martin, the D2CCA East Region Player of the Year and first team All-Region selection, adds her second All-America award to her resume after being named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Coaches' All-America team last week. Martin is the sixth student-athlete to earn All-America honors in program history, joining Mary Naughton, '89 in 1988, Michelle Doonan, '95 in 1994 and 1995, Suzanne Patchett, '97 in 1996 and 1997, Julie Stockwell, '00 in 2000 and Tori Faieta, 15 in 2015. She is the second All-American in head coach Trisha Brown's 17 seasons at Stonehill.
Martin is a three-time All-Northeast-10 Conference selection who was also selected as the NE10 Player of the Year this season, as well as All-NE10 first team. She was named Most Outstanding Player in leading Stonehill to its first NCAA East Region Championship since 1995, and was selected to the NE10 All-Championship team this season. Additionally, Martin collected Spalding/NE10 Player of the Week honors on two occasions this winter.
Martin is the only player in the NE10 to rank among the top 12 in the Conference for scoring, rebounding and assists, leading Stonehill with 16.6 points and 5.0 assists, while ranking second on the team with her 7.4 rebounds per game, adding 1.1 steals in 34.1 minutes per game. She is second in the NE10 for assists, assist/turnover ratio (+2.3/gm) and free-throw percentage (.854), ranking fourth in scoring and 12th in rebounding, while ranking 17th nationally in Division II for assist/turnover ratio, 27th in assists and 45th for free-throw percentage.
Martin led Stonehill in scoring 17 times this season, rebounding 13 and assists 22, posting six double-doubles, including her first career 20-20 game with a game-high 27 points and career-best 20 rebounds in the Skyhawks national quarterfinal matchup with Indiana University of Pennsylvania last week. She scored in double-figures 28 of the Skyhawks 33 games this season, netting 20-plus points ten times, and grabbing ten-plus rebounds on five occasions. Martin netted a season-high 29 points in the NE10 Championship against rival Bentley University on March 4. She scored a career-high 33 points at Franklin Pierce University on February 6, 2016.
Martin set a program record this season with her 1,126 minutes played, with her 33 starts one shy of the program record and her 213 defensive rebounds is the second-highest single-season total in program history. Her 549 points ranks ninth on the program's all-time single season list and her .854 free-throw percentage ranks eighth.
Martin started 91 of 107 games played over her collegiate career at Stonehill. She became the 30th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points against LIU Post on November 25 and finished her career ranked 11th in program history with her 1,486 career points. Martin's 13.9 points per game scoring average over her career ranks ninth all-time in program history, while also ranking third for career minutes per game (31.7), fourth in career free-throw percentage (.835), sixth with 399 made free-throws, eighth with 515 defensive rebounds, ninth with 145 three-pointers and tenth with 448 assists. She earned All-NE10 third team honors as a sophomore and second team accolades her junior year before missing the entire 2016-17 season to injury. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the 2014-15 NCAA Division II East Regional as a sophomore and earned NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll multiple semesters.
Stonehill finished its memorable 2017-18 season with a 29-4 record overall, one win shy of the program record, and ranked No. 8 in the final WBCA Division II poll. The Skyhawks returned to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the third time in program history, but its first since 1995, after winning the East Regional as the top seed at Merkert Gymnasium. Stonehill won its ninth NE10 regular season championship with a 20-1 mark, winning a program-record 20-straight Conference games to set a program record for league wins.
