Women's Basketball Cruises Past Franklin Pierce, 71-36

Hyslip and Reuter double-doubles lead Skyhawks to fifth-straight win

EASTON, Mass. (December 2, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in this week's D2SIDA East Region media poll, jumped out early and didn't look back in posting its fifth-straight win with a commanding 71-36 victory over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.

Senior Samantha Hyslip (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) and sophomore Gabrielle Reuter (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Lawrence Academy) each recorded double-doubles to lead Stonehill to the win. Hyslip notched her fourth double-double of the season (11th career) with 12 points and ten rebounds, to go with two assists on 4-of-9 shooting, converting all four free-throws, while Reuter registered the first double-double of her career with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and a career-high 11 boards in 15 minutes off the bench.

Senior Kelly Martin (Scituate, Massachusetts/Scituate) scored a game-high 14 points and dished out seven assists, with just one turnover, to go with four rebounds, a blocked shot and steal. Junior Tayler Wornum (Randolph, Massachusetts/Archbishop Williams) chipped in with season-highs of eight points and seven rebounds for the Skyhawks.

Senior Emma Thacker (Nairne, Australia) and freshman Claudia Tucci (Trumbull, Connecticut/Trumbull) each scored a team-high ten points for Franklin Pierce. Thacker added three rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot and a steal, while Tucci drained all eight free-throw attempts in 18 minutes off the bench.

Stonehill limited Franklin Pierce to 17.9-percent shooting for the contest (10-for-56), including 0-for-9 in the fourth quarter, with the Ravens connecting on just 2-of-12 (16.7%) three-pointers. The Skyhawks also posted a 51-34 rebounding advantage.

Stonehill never trailed and led for all but the opening 1:29, before Hyslip scored the game's first basket. The Skyhawks scored the last five points of the opening quarter to take a seven-point lead (16-9) into the second after a Kelsey Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) three-pointer and Hyslip layup in the closing two minutes.

Stonehill out-scored Franklin Pierce 17-5 in the second quarter to open a 19-point (33-14) halftime lead. The Skyhawks scored 13-straight points after a Thacker three to start the quarter, claiming a double-digit lead and stretching it to 17 (29-12) on a Martin triple with 3:34 left in the half. Martin also scored the first four points of the run, scoring seven of the Skyhawks 13 in all.

Stonehill's lead wouldn't dip below double-digits the rest of the way, using a 16-4 run in the third quarter to extend the lead to 27 (51-24) after two free-throws from sophomore Grace Carter (Arlington, Massachusetts/Arlington) in the final minute of the third. The Skyhawks doubled up Franklin Pierce (20-10) in the fourth quarter to seal the win

Stonehill (5-1, 4-1 NE10) hits the road for the remainder of the month of December, starting with an NE10 matchup at Assumption College on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks don't return to Merkert Gym until it rings in the New Year with a non-conference contest with Roberts Wesleyan College on New Year's Day at 1 p.m. Franklin Pierce (4-5, 1-4 NE10) hosts Merrimack College on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
