Women's Basketball Rolls at Franklin Pierce, 61-43

Walsh nets 21 points, while Hyslip scores nine of 17 points in 4th quarter to lead Skyhawks

RINDGE, N.H. (November 30, 2016) – Stonehill College outscored Franklin Pierce University 18-2 in the second quarter to take the lead for good on its way to a 61-43 triumph in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at the Fieldhouse tonight.

Juniors Courtney Walsh (Windham, New Hampshire/Central Catholic) and Samantha Hyslip (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) combined for 38 points to lead Stonehill to its second road win of the week. Walsh scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the first half, connecting on 4-of-6 three-pointers in the half, to go with three assists as she finished shooting 7-for-14 from the field overall. Hyslip netted nine of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to help the Skyhawks seal the win, making 8-of-12 shots overall, with three rebounds.

Junior Kate Ross (Providence, Rhode Island/The Lincoln School) added a career-high matching nine points on 4-of-9 shooting, with five rebounds and a career-best seven assists, while sophomore Tayler Wornum (Randolph, Massachusetts/Archbishop Williams) hauled in a career-high ten rebounds to go with seven points and two steals.

Stonehill dished out assists on 23 of its 25 field goals for the night, as it finished shooting 43.1-percent from the floor (25-for-58), including 5-for-14 (35.7%) from three-point range, while converting 6-of-8 free-throws. The Skyhawks posted a commanding 45-27 rebounding advantage and outscored Franklin Pierce 20-12 in points off turnovers, despite committing four more (23-19) than the Ravens. Franklin Pierce was limited to 33.3-percent shooting (17-for-51), including 7-for-24 (29.2%) in the first half, connecting on 2-of-8 three-pointers (25%), and converting just 7-of-14 free-throws (50%).

Senior Dana Campbell (Merrick, New York/St. Dominic) was the lone Franklin Pierce player in double figures with 14 points on 6-of-18 shooting, including 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, with three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Junior Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) added eight points, while freshman Mya Mosley (Worcester, Massachusetts/Wachusett Regional) grabbed a team-high seven boards.

Franklin Pierce held a three point lead (13-10) after a quarter of play, but Walsh scored the first five points of the second quarter, including a three-pointer, to put Stonehill in front. Senior Alison Palma (Stamford, Connecticut/Trinity Catholic) answered for the Ravens to knot the score (15-15) on their next trip, but the hosts wouldn't score again in the quarter as the Skyhawks closed the half with a 13-0 run to carry a double-digit lead (28-15) into halftime. Wornum scored the first five points of the run, which was capped by a Walsh triple with 19-seconds left.

Hyslip opened the third quarter with a layup to extend the run to 15-points, before Franklin Pierce ended its eight-minute scoring drought with five straight points to cut the gap to ten (30-20) after Mayo made one of two at the line with 6:52 remaining in the third. Hyslip fueled a 9-1 Stonehill run with four points, which was capped by a Walsh three, to stretch the Skyhawks lead to 18 (39-21) midway through the quarter.

Franklin Pierce trimmed the lead to nine (41-32) after two Palma free-throws with 1:08 left in the third, but would get no closer as Stonehill took an 11 point lead (44-33) into the fourth. The Skyhawks lead was still 11 (52-41) with 4:40 remaining, when Hyslip scored five straight, including a three-point play, to push the advantage to 16 (57-41) with 1:37 on the clock to close out the win.         

Stonehill (4-3, 3-1 NE-10) is back on the road on Saturday at Saint Michael's College for a Northeast-10 matchup at 1:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Wednesday, December 7, to host Southern New Hampshire University at Merkert Gym at 5:30 p.m. Franklin Pierce (2-5, 0-4 NE-10) hosts Assumption College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
