Parks leads Pumas with game-high 22 points; Hyslip named to All-Tourney team

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (November 19, 2016) – Saint Joseph's (Indiana) College jumped out to a 13 point lead after a quarter of play and didn't look back in posting a 64-47 triumph over Stonehill College in non-conference women's basketball action on day two of the Redhawks Alumni Classic, hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College, at Voller Athletic Center this afternoon.

Senior Kalea Parks (Maywood, Illinois/Provisio East) led Saint Joseph's with a game-high 22 points as the lone Puma in double-figures, shooting 11-for-20 from the field, to go with five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals, earning a spot on the Redhawks Alumni Classic All-Tournament Team. Freshman Nicolet DeVincentis (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty Benton) added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from three off the bench with two offensive rebounds, while junior Abbey Titzer (Indianapolis, Indiana/Franklin Central) registered seven points, six boards (four offensive) and three assists.

Junior Samantha Hyslip (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) totaled 13 points, aided by 7-of-8 shooting at the free-throw line, with six rebounds for Stonehill and also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Classmate Courtney Walsh (Windham, New Hampshire/Central Catholic) added 14 points, shooting 4-for-10 from three-point range, with two boards, while sophomore Tayler Wornum (Randolph, Massachusetts/Archbishop Williams) contributed season-highs of eight points, seven rebounds (five offensive) and two assists. Junior Kate Ross (Providence, Rhode Island/The Lincoln School) chipped in with six boards (three offensive).

Saint Joseph's shot 44.1-percent from the field (26-for-59), including 7-for-13 (53.8%) from three-point range, turning a 33-32 rebounding edge into a 14-7 advantage in second chance points. Stonehill was limited to 31.9-percent shooting from the floor (15-for-47), including 23.7% (9-38) over the first three quarters, connecting at 30.8% (4-13) from beyond the arc.

Saint Joseph's used a 15-2 run in the first quarter to turn a two point lead (6-4) four minutes into the game into a 15 point advantage (21-6) after a Jamee Denman (Chicago, Illinois/William J. Bogan) three-pointer with 26-seconds to play in the opening frame. The Pumas extended their lead to 16 (28-12) on a three by DeVincentis halfway through the second quarter.

Stonehill closed the gap to ten (31-21) at the half, but Saint Joseph's scored the first four points of the third quarter to reclaim a 14 point lead (35-21) after two straight baskets by Parks. The Skyhawks closed the gap to 11 (37-26) with a layup from sophomore Maty Diabate (Holden, Massachusetts/Wachusett Regional) with 2:21 remaining in the quarter, but the Pumas used a 9-2 spurt to open an 18-point lead (46-28) after a Titzer layup with 40-seconds left.

Stonehill pulled within 13 (50-37) after a Wornum jumper two minutes into the fourth quarter, but Saint Joseph's extended the lead back to 18 (58-40) on a Parks jumper with 4:15 remaining to seal it first win of the season.

Stonehill (2-2, 1-0 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Merrimack College for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Merkert Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. Saint Joseph's (1-4, 0-0 GLVC) hosts Northern Michigan University for its McDonald's Thanksgiving Classic on Friday, November 25, at 3 p.m.
