Frappier posts team-high 12 points off the bench, including buzzer-beating put back
COLCHESTER, Vt. (January 4, 2014) – Junior forward Kelly Frappier's (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) put back at the buzzer lifted Saint Michael's College to a 61-59 triumph over Stonehill College, ranked 22nd in the most recent USA TODAY Sports Division II poll, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at Ross Sports Center this afternoon.
Frappier collected a missed jumper from senior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and put it back up and in as time expired as Saint Michael's rallied from a 14 point second half deficit for the win. Frappier shared the team lead for the Purple Knights with her 12 points off the bench as she made all six of her shots from the field and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals over 21 minutes.
Junior Maggie Sabine (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill) also posted 12 points for Saint Michael's, shooting 5-for-9 from the field, to go with seven rebounds. Long contributed ten points and eight rebounds, while freshman Indira Evora (Somerville, Mass./Somerville) finished just a point shy of a double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Junior Amy Pelletier (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) drained a three-pointer with 6.7-seconds to play that looked to extend the game to overtime. She led Stonehill with 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting, including 4-for-10 from three-point range, to go with three assists, two rebounds and two steals. Senior Mary Louise Dixon (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) added 14 points, a team-high six rebounds, five assists and four steals, while sophomore Paige Marshall (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) posted ten points on 3-of-5 shooting, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, and three rebounds.
Stonehill was held to 30.4-percent (21-for-69) shooting from the field, including 24.1% (7-for-29) in the second half, as the Skyhawks connected on 12-of-33 (36.4%) three-pointers and was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Stonehill was unable to take advantage of 21 Saint Michael's turnovers, while throwing the ball away just 12 times themselves, as the Purple Knights outscored the visitors 9-7 in points off turnovers. The Purple Knights 46-32 rebounding advantage also helped in a 40-8 margin in points in the paint. Saint Michael's shot 45.5-percent (25-for-55) from the field, including 51.7% (15-29) in the second half, finishing 5-for-14 (35.7%) from three-point range and 6-for-10 from the line.

Stonehill held an 11 point (38-27) halftime lead after holding as much as a 13 point advantage over the opening 20 minutes. The Skyhawks extended their lead to 14 twice over the opening four minutes of the second half, with a three-pointer from Dixon three minutes in and a pair of Marshall free-throws with 16:26 to play. Saint Michael's used a 13-2 run to close within three (47-44) after a three from sophomore Megan Gaudreau (Brooklyn, Conn./Pomfret School) with 11:09 remaining. Frappier had six of her 12 points during that stretch.
Pelletier quieted the run with a three-pointer and Stonehill regained a nine point cushion (53-44) after a three-point play from Dixon with 9:49 left. Gaudreau keyed a string of seven straight points for Saint Michael's to pull the Purple Knights within two (53-51) with 7:15 remaining, but the Skyhawks answered again, this time with a three by junior Ashley Gendron (Auburn, N.H./Manchester Memorial).
That would prove to be Stonehill's final basket until Pelletier's tying three with 6.7-seconds left as a three-pointer by senior Kaitlin Geary (Milton, Vt./Milton) and a basket by Frappier with 2:49 remaining knotted the score before senior Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) put the Purple Knights in front (58-56) with 2:08 to play, marking their first lead since scoring the opening basket of the game. Long made one of two free-throws for a three-point (59-56) lead with 16-seconds on the clock, before Pelletier halted a seven minute scoring drought for Stonehill with her tying three.
Stonehill held a pair of ten point leads early on in the first half, but its lead was just two (18-16) at the midway point of the opening frame. The Skyhawks used a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to open a 13 point (31-18) advantage after a Pelletier three 4:49 before halftime. Dixon and junior Tori Faieta (Lynn, Mass./Saint Mary's) also connected on threes during that stretch.
Stonehill (7-4, 4-3 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday, when it visits 18th-ranked Adelphi University for a Northeast-10 clash at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, January 11, to host Pace University at Merkert Gymnasium at 1:30 p.m. Saint Michael's (3-8, 2-5 NE-10) hosts Le Moyne College next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
