Wellesley, Mass., senior earns honor for third time in her career
EASTON, Mass. (December 10, 2013) – Stonehill College senior guard Mary Louise Dixon (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) has been named the Spalding Northeast-10 Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week by the league office.
Dixon led Stonehill to a 2-0 week as she averaged 21 points, 5.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 3.5 steals, while shooting 48-percent (12-for-25) from the field, including 9-for-14 (64.3%) from three-point range, and converted 9-of-10 (90%) free-throws. She scored all of her game-high 21 points in the second half to lift the Skyhawks to a 79-68 win over Assumption College on Wednesday, shooting 5-for-6 from beyond the arc (5-5 in the second half), to go with five rebounds, five assists and a steal. Dixon capped the week by filling the stat sheet with 21 points, nine assists, six rebounds and a career-high matching six steals in Saturday's 71-62 win over Southern New Hampshire University, shooting 7-for-15 from the field, including 4-for-8 from long distance.
Dixon ranks fourth among Northeast-10 leaders with her team-high 17.1 points per game through nine contests for Stonehill this season. She is also adding 4.8 rebounds, 6.3 assists (2nd NE-10) and 1.7 steals (12th) in 31.9 minutes per game (13th). Dixon is shooting 46.5-percent from the field, including 43.5% (20-for-46) from three-point distance (9th), and converting at 80.8% (42-52) from the free-throw line (10th). Her 2.2 three-point field goals per game are good for fourth among NE-10 leaders, while her 4.7 free-throws made per game rank fifth in the league. Dixon also ranks sixth nationally in Division II for assists per game.
Dixon, an honorable mention All-American by both the Women's Basketball Coaches of America (WBCA) and Division II Bulletin as a junior, has played 93 career games at Stonehill, starting 80, and her 32.8 career minutes per game average is on pace to set a new program record. She became the 27th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 career point plateau with her opening basket of the season in the Skyhawks season-opening 82-64 win over Barry (Fla.) University and currently ranks 20th in program history with 1,152 career points. Dixon also ranks third all-time at Stonehill for career free-throw percentage (.847), fourth in assists per game (4.9) and eighth for both assists (455) and made free-throws (336).
Dixon is a two-time All-Northeast-10 selection, earning first team honors as a junior after being named to the third team her sophomore season. She collected Daktronics All-East Region second team honors last winter and has earned NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll status five of six semesters to date. Dixon earned All-Tournament team honors at the NCAA Division II East Regional after scoring an NCAA Tournament program record with her career-best 32 points in the Skyhawks first round win over Franklin Pierce University, also setting program marks for free-throws made (13) and free-throw percentage (13-for-13).
Stonehill (7-2, 4-1 NE-10), ranked 14th in the most recent USA TODAY Sports Division II poll, is back in action tonight when it closes out its first semester schedule at Saint Anselm College at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks don't return to Merkert Gymnasium until Saturday, January 11, when they host Pace University for a Northeast-10 matchup at 1:30 p.m.
