Wellesley, Mass., junior guard earns All-Region honors for first time
EASTON, Mass. (March 14, 2013) – Stonehill College junior guard Mary Louise Dixon (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) has been named to the Daktronics All-East Region second team as selected by sports information directors from the region it was announced today.
Dixon, who is Stonehill's first All-Region selection since Emily Rousseau, '11, and Kelsey Simonds, '10, in 2009-10, earns All-East Region honors for the first time with her Daktronics second team accolades. She also collected All-Northeast-10 Conference honors for the second-straight year with her first team selection after earning second team honors as a sophomore.
Dixon, who was named the NE-10 Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks to close out the regular season in February, has started all 27 games this season and is averaging a team-high 13.4 points (12th NE-10), adding 6.4 rebounds (20th), a team-best 6.2 assists (2nd NE-10 and nationally) and 1.2 steals in 32.7 minutes (15th) per game. She is shooting 43.2-percent from the field and a Conference-leading 86.1% (130-for-151) from the free-throw line (23rd nationally) for the year. She has posted three double-doubles, including the third triple-double in program history in a 103-93 win over UMass Lowell on February 13, and has led Stonehill in scoring ten times. Her free-throw percentage currently ranks seventh on the program's single-season list, while her assist average is tied for fifth highest all-time and assist total (166) tied for eighth in program history at Stonehill.
Dixon, an NE-10 All-Rookie team selection as a freshman, enters the NCAA Tournament 48 points shy of becoming the 27th 1,000-point scorer in program history. She has totaled 952 points, 429 rebounds, 390 assists and 136 steals in 92 career games played. Dixon ranks third in program history with her .848 career free-throw percentage, while ranking tenth in assists and her 32.9 career minutes per game average is best in program history.
Dixon's .888 (87-for-98) free-throw percentage as a sophomore ranked third in the NE-10 and is the third-highest single-season average in program history. She set a single-game program record for free-throw percentage by converting all 17 free-throw attempts in her triple-double performance against UMass Lowell in February, while the 17 made free-throw attempts matched the program record for made free-throws in a game. Dixon has earned NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll three semesters at Stonehill, as well as Athletic Director's Honor Roll once.
Stonehill (23-4, 19-3 NE-10), ranked 12th in this week's USA TODAY Sports/Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II poll, is seeded second for the NCAA Division II Tournament's East Regional, and will face seventh-seeded Franklin Pierce University (18-10, 14-8 NE-10) in a first round matchup tomorrow at Bentley University's Dana Athletic Center at 2:30 p.m. The Skyhawks are making their 21st NCAA Tournament appearance after posting the 23rd 20-win season in the program's 42 year history this season. Admission for the regional will be $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students, children and senior citizens per session. Friday's schedule is broken up into an afternoon and evening session, with a separate ticket for each required. The remaining games on Saturday and Monday will require just one ticket per day.
