All proceeds to benefit Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund

EASTON, Mass. (February 7, 2013) – Stonehill College will host its annual Play4Kay event during its home basketball doubleheaders on Sunday, February 10, and Wednesday, February 13, at Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks will host Merrimack College for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Sunday, February 10, with the women's game at 5:30 p.m., and the men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m. Stonehill will host the UMass Lowell on Wednesday, February 13, at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

Stonehill is one of approximately 2,000 schools and organizations committed to participating in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Play 4Kay initiative this month. Play 4Kay is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The official dates for the 2013 event is February 8-18. The official charity is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the WBCA and The V Foundation. Since the initiative's inception in 2007, Play 4Kay has raised over $2-million for breast cancer awareness and research.

On both days, Stonehill will accept donations to the Kay Yow Cancer fund and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. Stonehill's women's basketball team will be wearing pink shoe laces and warm-ups. The first 100 Stonehill students in attendance at Sunday's game against Merrimack will receive special issue pink "Skyhawk Nation" T-Shirts. There will also be other special "pink" giveaways and during halftime there will be a contest for students as well as a "Miracle Minute" for donations will be held. Fans can make donations at www.play4kay.org and searching for Stonehill women's basketball. The fund is named after the late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, who passed away after her courageous 22-year battle with breast cancer.

The Stonehill women's basketball team (17-3, 13-3 NE-10), ranked 14th in this week's USA TODAY Sports/WBCA Division II poll, currently sits in second place in the NE-10 standings heading into Sunday's game against Merrimack (11-9, 7-9 NE-10).

The Stonehill men's basketball team (10-10, 6-10 NE-10) and Merrimack (9-12, 6-10 NE-10) are currently tied for 11th place in the NE-10 standings, just one game behind The College of Saint Rose for the final Conference Tournament spot.
