Second Half Run Lifts Stonehill Past Caldwell, 55-50

Pelletier nets season-high 19 points to lead Skyhawks

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 18, 2011) – Stonehill College bounced back from a midweek defeat to post a 55-50 victory over Caldwell College on day one of the 2011 Assumption College Tip Off Classic at Laska Gymnasium this evening.

Freshman guard Amy Pelletier (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) made 7-of-14 shots from the field, including 5-for-10 from three-point range, in netting a season-high 19 points to lead Stonehill to the win. Sophomore guard Mary Louise Dixon (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) hauled in a career and game-high 12 rebounds for the Skyhawks to go with seven points, eight assists and two steals. Senior Tania Williams (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward-Melville) contributed eight points and four rebounds, while sophomore Asia Ewing (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) chipped in six points and six boards.

Junior Torey Jones (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Academy) led the way for Caldwell with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-23 shooting from the field, including 2-for-8 from beyond the arc, six assists and three rebounds. Sophomore Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) came off the bench to post a double-double of ten points and ten rebounds (four offensive), shooting 5-for-10 from the field. Junior Gillian Felix (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) contributed eight points and six rebounds, while senior Stephanie Cadet (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) also netted eight points for the Cougars.

Stonehill shot 43.8-percent (7-for-16) from three-point range, keyed by Pelletier's 5-for-10 shooting from beyond the arc, as part of 37.9% (22-for-58) shooting from the field overall while converting 4-of-5 free-throws on the night. The Skyhawks continue to take good care of the ball, committing just ten turnovers in the game after having six at Saint Anselm College on Wednesday night, resulting in a 17-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Caldwell outrebounded Stonehill 40-38, but the Skyhawks posted a 10-6 edge in second chance points. The Cougars finished shooting 33.9-percent (20-for-59) from the field, including 5-for-17 (29.4%) from deep, after making just 6-of-29 shots (20.7%) in the second half.

Stonehill overcame a ten point (32-22) halftime deficit keyed by 29.6-percent (8-27) shooting in the opening 20 minutes while Caldwell shot 46.7% (14-30), including 4-for-9 (44.4%) from three-point range. The Skyhawks opened the second half with a 13-4 run to close within a point (36-35) after a layup from Ewing just over seven minutes in. Pelletier netted five points during that stretch, including a three-pointer.

Stonehill took its first lead of the half (41-40) with a Pelletier jumper with 9:26 remaining that spurred a 14-2 run. The run extended the Skyhawks lead to nine points (51-42) after back-to-back three-pointers from freshman guard Jamie Panton (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and Pelletier with 3:40 to play. Williams drained two key free throws and added a layup with just over a minute to play to seal the win after Caldwell had crept back within six.

Stonehill led by as much as five (11-6) after a pair of Williams free-throws during a back and forth opening ten minutes of the first half. Caldwell reeled off an 18-4 run to take a nine point lead (24-15) with two straight baskets from Jones with 4:29 remaining in the half. The Cougars extended the lead to 12 (29-17) on a Jones jumper with 2:15 left in the frame before settling on the ten point halftime margin.

Stonehill (2-1, 0-1 NE-10) is right back in action here at Laska Gymnasium tomorrow for day two of the Classic when it faces Molloy College at 1:30 p.m. The Skyhawks next home game is Sunday, November 27, when it hosts Merrimack College in Merkert Gymnasium, for an NE-10 clash at 1:30 p.m. Caldwell (1-1, 0-0 CACC) faces host Assumption College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
