Men's Track & Field Competes at Two Meets, Finishes Fourth at USM Open

Skyhawks post four event wins at USM Open

EASTON, Mass. (January 25, 2020) – The Stonehill College men's track & field program turned in strong performances at two events on Saturday, sending two runners to the John Thomas Terrier Invitational at Boston University, while the majority of the team competed at the USM Open, hosted by the University of Southern Maine at the Costello Sports Complex.

Sophomore Nickolas McNamee and junior Kevin Wheelock competed at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University, today.

McNamee finished 44th out of 170 entries in the one mile run, he finished first in his section, posting a personal-best time of 4:15.23 – good for fifth in the NE10 this season. Wheelock placed 92nd out of 153 runners in the 3000-meter run in 8:44.62, sixth fastest in the NE10 this season.

Stonehill finished fourth as a team at the USM Open with 96 points, with host Southern Maine taking first with 140 points. Merrimack College was second with 110 points and Plymouth State University third at 106. The Skyhawks finished 38 points ahead of fellow Northeast-10 Conference member Assumption College (59 points) in fifth.

USM Highlights

  • Sophomore Michel-Ange Siaba won the triple jump and led three from Stonehill in the top five out of 16 entries at USM by clearing a distance of 45-feet, 11.75-inches – good for third in the NE10 this season. Freshman Cameron Bernard placed third at 43-05.25 (sixth in the NE10) and classmate Sam Anderson finished fifth at 41-10.75.
  • Bernard also finished fourth out of 20 entries in the high jump by clearing a height of 6-feet, 0.75-inches – tied for sixth in the NE10.
  • Sophomore Anthony Magazzu and freshman Jeremiah Kidd-Taylor took first and second place, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Magazzu won the event in a field of 27 in a personal-best 51.83-seconds, while Kidd-Taylor clocked in at 52.09.
  • Sophomore Evan Kennedy won the 800-meter run and led three from Stonehill in the top five out of 20 competitors with his time of 1:59.77. Freshman Noah Drapeau finished fourth in 2:02.04, while junior Chris McCaffrey was fifth in 2:04.07.
  • Freshman Colin Black won the 3000-meter run, leading the pack of 13 entries with his personal-best time of 9:16.52.
  • Junior Ethan Famiano finished third in the 55-meter high hurdles in 7.89-seconds after qualifying fourth out of 19 entries in 7.86-seconds. Senior Collin Kuchachik placed fifth in 8.16-seconds after qualifying eighth in 8.29, while freshman Jake Dwyer finished eighth in 8.42 after qualifying sixth in 8.17.

  • Dwyer was also seventh out of 41 entries in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.94-seconds, while sophomore Jack Bowers finished eighth in 23.96-seconds.
  • Bowers, Magazzu, Kidd-Taylor and Anderson also ran the 4x400-meter relay that finished second in 3:30.75 – just 0.18-seconds behind host Southern Maine (3:30.57). Bowers ran the lead leg in 52.2-seconds, with Kidd-Taylor completing the second leg in 53.2-seconds, followed by Anderson running the third leg in 52.8-seconds, before Magazzu ran the anchor leg in 51.7-seconds.

Other Results

  • Sophomore Robert Lisi placed seventh out of 25 entries in the weight throw with a personal-best distance of 43-feet, 10.75-inches. Senior William Lyons, Jr.  placed 15th with a personal-best throw of 36-11.50.
  • Freshman Nate Skopas finished 14th out of 26 entries in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.93-seconds. Skopas also finished 11th in the 200-meter dash in 24.20-seconds.
  • Freshman Tyler Thomas placed 15th out of 33 throwers competing in the shot put with a personal-best distance of 39-feet, 3.75-inches. Lisi was 18th at 38-02.25, while freshman Daniel Bennett took 22nd at 34-11.25.
