EASTON, Mass. (May 29, 2019) – Three Stonehill College student-athletes have earned spots on the Google Cloud Academic All-District® First Team for men's cross country and track & field, as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members in Division II from the East Region, today.

Senior All-Americans Alex Demeule and Stephen Vercollone, along with classmate Riley Dowd have all been selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-District® I first team, marking the seventh-straight year Stonehill has placed multiple student-athletes on CoSIDA's men's cross country/track & field first team. The trio give the Stonehill men's cross country and track & field programs 25 Academic All-District® honorees all-time and are now eligible for Academic All-America® selection, as voted by CoSIDA members.

Demeule is just the second Stonehill male student-athlete to earn Academic All-District® honors three times, joining former cross country and track & field standout Bryan Wilcox, '15, and the third overall, with women's track & field thrower Trisha Pierson, '16 also a three-time Academic All-District™. Demeule and Dowd give the Stonehill men's cross country/track & field programs seven student-athletes all-time to earn multiple All-District™ selections.

Demeule, who recently graduated from Stonehill with a Bachelor's Degree in finance with a 3.79 grade point average, earns Academic All-District® first team honors for the third-straight year. He was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® third team as a junior and has recently been named a finalist for both the Northeast-10 Conference Man of the Year and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards which will be presented at the Conference's Awards night on Monday. Demeule was recognized as Stonehill's Edward E. Martin Senior Male Scholar-Athlete Award at its end of the year awards night and is a three-time recipient of the College's St. Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Students, Medal for having the highest cumulative GPA on the men's cross country and track & field teams.

Demeule is a seven-time NE10 Academic All-Conference selection over his Stonehill career, receiving the NE10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award following the 2018 men's cross country season. He is a four-time All-Academic honoree by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), has earned NE10 Academic Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll status every semester and received the Division II Athletic Directors Association (D2ADA) Academic Achievement Award. Demeule has been inducted to the Lambda Epsilon Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies, is a member of the Financial Management Association and was named the finance department Student of the Year. He served as portfolio manager with Stonehill's Investment Finance Initiative (SCIFI), a yearlong, comprehensive, academic and professional development course of study charged with the management of the Mary Herlihy Opportunity Fund at the College.

Demeule is a five-time NCAA Championships participant over his career, competing at three NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships and making two appearances at the NCAA II Indoor Track & Field Championships as a member of the 4000-meter distance medley relay, earning All-America honors as a junior when the relay finished fifth in a then school-record 9:49.12, running the opening 1200-meter leg. He has been a key member of a Stonehill cross country program that has won the last two NCAA East Regional Championships as well as the 2017 NE10 title. Demeule is a four-time USTFCCCA All-East Region performer over his career, earning All-New England status five times, and a five-time All-NE10 performer, collecting first team honors in cross country as a junior and senior.

Dowd, who graduated from Stonehill last week with a Bachelor's Degree as a double major in economics and criminology with a 3.80 cumulative GPA, is an Academic All-District® first team selection for the second-straight year. He is a four-time USTFCCCA All-Academic recipient in cross country and a five-time NE10 Academic All-Conference honoree between cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field. Dowd is a member of the Edwin H. Sutherland Criminology Honor Society and Omicron Epsilon who has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester, while also receiving the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award.

Dowd is a four-time NCAA Division II Championships participant with the men's cross country program over his career, helping the Skyhawks win the last two NCAA II East Regional Championships as well as the 2017 Northeast-10 title. He is a five-time All-NE10 performer, including three times for cross country, with first team honors as a senior when he placed fifth at the NE10 Championships. Dowd is a three-time USTFCCCA All-East Region runner in cross country, finishing tenth at the regional championship three-straight years, and three-time All-New England performer, earning the honors once with a ninth place finish at the 2017 New England Cross Country Championships and twice as a member of the 4x800-meter relay at the New England Indoor Championships.

Vercollone, who graduated from Stonehill with a Bachelor's Degree after double majoring in graphic design and marketing and a 3.53 GPA, earns Academic All-District® first team honors for the first time. He is a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree who has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll every semester and Athletic Director's Honor Roll multiple semesters. Vercollone was an Athletic Director's Award recipient at Stonehill's end of the year Award's Night.


Dowd earns Academic All-District honors for the second-straight year

Vercollone, who is also a four-year member of Stonehill's men's soccer program, is a three-time NCAA Championships participant with the track & field program. He is a two-time All-American after finishing seventh in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Kingsville, Texas, over the weekend, while running the 800-meter leg for the Skyhawks 4000-meter distance medley relay that finished fifth at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in a then-record 9:49.12. Vercollone is still a member of Stonehill's school-record DMR that posted a time of 9:47.24 at Boston University to qualify for this year's NCAA Championships and holds the indoor (1:51.19) and outdoor (1:52.48) 800-meter school records.

Vercollone is a nine-time All-New England performer, a seven-time USTFCCCA All-East Region and six-time All-NE10 honoree over the course of his career. He won the 800-meter run at the 2019 NE10 Indoor Championships and was part of the NE10 Champion 4x800-meter relay at the 2019 NE10 Outdoor Championships. He finished second at the New England Outdoor Championships for the 800-meter run and won New England titles during the winter with the indoor 4x800 and DMR.

The Stonehill men's cross country and track & field programs enjoyed a strong 2018-19 season, led by the cross country program winning its second-straight NCAA East Regional Championship, marking its fifth title in program history overall, on its way to a 16th-straight trip to the NCAA Division II Championships. The track & field seasons saw the Skyhawks finishing fourth at the NE10 Indoor Championships and fifth at the Outdoor Championships, sending two to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time since 2013. Vercollone and fellow senior Lucas Taxter both qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor Championships, earning three combined All-America honors, with the 4000-meter distance medley relay competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships as well.
