Men's Track & Field Posts Three Wins on Day Two of Ocean State Invitational


Ireland turned in three top five performances, including a debut in the long jump, to go with a win in the 200-meter dash

Ireland part of three top fives to lead Skyhawks on Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 13, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's track & field program turned in three first place finishes and eight top fives on day two of the Ocean State Invitational, hosted by Brown University and Providence College, at Brown Stadium today.

Junior Justin Ireland won the 200-meter dash in 21.98-seconds, leading a list of 21 entries. Sophomore Desmond Bernal finished 14th in a personal-best 23.17-seconds, while freshman Jack Bowers was 16th in 23.44-seconds and sophomore Ethan Famiano was 19th in a personal-best 23.60.

Bowers would go on to win the 400-meter hurdles, marking his second win in the event this season, finishing in a personal-best 54.82-seconds to lead the field of 15. Junior Jeremy Breen placed 14th in a personal-best 1:01.46.

Famiano was also third in the 110-meter high hurdles in a personal-best 14.97-seconds after qualifying fourth out of ten entries in 15.34-seconds. Junior Collin Kuchachik placed sixth in the final in 15.88-seconds after qualifying seventh in 16.13.

Ireland, Bernal and Famiano, along with senior Joe Connolly, led the Stonehill 4x100-meter relay to second place in a season-best 42.57-seconds. Bernal ran the lead leg, followed by Ireland and Famiano, before Connolly took the anchor leg.

Ireland's results for the day also included competing in the long jump for the first time in his career and placing fourth out of 15 entries with a distance of 20-feet, 5.75-inches on his fourth attempt.

Senior Xavier Young placed second in the shot put with a distance of 50-feet, 0.5-inches on his final throw. He was also fourth in the discus throw with a distance of 134-feet, 10-inches on his first attempt.

Freshman Anthony Magazzu took first out of 12 entries in the collegiate 400-meter dash in 50.36-seconds. Senior Daniel Bomba placed tenth in the pole vault, clearing a personal-best height of 13-feet, 7.25-inches.

Stonehill returns to action next Saturday, when it competes at the Holy Cross Invitational in Worcester, Massachusetts. Stonehill will host its annual Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 27.
