EASTON, Mass. (February 13, 2019) – Stonehill College senior Xavier Young has earned Northeast-10 Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors for the first time this season, the league announced.

Young, who collected NE10 Field Rookie of the Week three times and Athlete of the Week once during his first season with the team as a junior, receives Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second time in his career after a record-breaking performance over the weekend. He broke his own school-record in the shot put with a distance of 50-feet, 1.75-inches to place second out of 26 throwers at the University of Rhode Island's Coaches' Tribute Meet on Saturday. Young broke his previous program indoor mark of 49-11.75 set at the 2018 NE10 Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Young's throw from Saturday now ranks second on the Northeast-10's performance chart heading into this weekend's NE10 Championships. He has competed in three events this season, adding a fourth place finish (49-7.25) in the shot put at URI's Sorlein Invitational on January 19 and a sixth place showing (46-5.25) at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational on January 26.

Young enjoyed a breakout year in the shot put as a junior, earning All-East Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the indoor and outdoor seasons. He also posted All-NE10 performances at the NE10 Indoor and Outdoor Championships, placing second at each event, picking up NE10 Field Rookie of the Year honors following the indoor season.

Young is a two-sport student-athlete at Stonehill, having just completed a standout four-year career for the Skyhawks football program. He played 41 games on the defensive line over his career, finishing with 56 tackles, including 16 solo, with 2.5 tackles for a loss of 13 yards, 1.0 sacks, two fumble recoveries and a blocked kick. Young posted 14 tackles (two solo), including two fumble recoveries and the blocked kick in nine games this past fall.

Stonehill, ranked fourth in this week's USTFCCCA East Regional rankings, is back in action on Saturday and Sunday when it competes at the NE10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by American International College, at the Smith College indoor facility in Northampton, Massachusetts.
