Men's Track & Field Logs Tops Fives at URI Sorlein Invitational

Demeule, Vercollone and Connolly lead Skyhawks

KINGSTON, R.I. (January 19, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program turned in six top five finishes to highlight its day at the University of Rhode Island's Sorlein Invitational inside the Mackal Fieldhouse today.

Senior All-American Alex Demeule ran second out of 25 competitors for Stonehill in the one mile run with a time of 4:22.85, trailing only a runner from the University of Connecticut and leading four Stonehill runners in the event. Senior Riley Dowd finished ninth in 4:26.35, while classmate Christopher Drace was 11th in 4:28.20.

Senior All-American Stephen Vercollone took third place out of 20 entries in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.94 to finish behind only two runners from the University of Connecticut and leading three Skyhawks in the top ten. Sophomore Christopher Lanahan finished sixth in a personal-best 1:57.55, while junior Jeremy Breen was eighth in 1:59.22.

Senior Joe Connolly finished third out of 24 entries in the 200-meter dash in 22.88-seconds, fastest among non-Division I competitors in the event. He was also the only non-Division I sprinter to qualify for the 60-meter dash finals and finished fourth in 7.08-seconds after qualifying third out of 24 entries in with a time of 7.09-seconds. Sophomore Desmond Bernal placed 12th in the 60-meter dash prelims in a personal-best 7.27-seconds, also finishing tenth in the 200-meter dash in a personal-best 23.48-seconds.

Connolly also ran the second leg of Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay that finished third as the only non-Division I relay in the field of seven. The Skyhawks posted a time of 3:30.35, with freshman Jack Bowers running the lead leg, before handing the baton to Connolly, and then freshman Anthony Magazzu third, before Lanahan ran the anchor leg.

Bowers and Magazzu finished tenth and 11th, respectively, out of 17 entries in the 400-meter dash. Bowers clocked in at 52.47-seconds, while Magazzu was right behind in 53.23.

Senior Xavier Young made his season debut for Stonehill, placing fourth out of 28 entries in the shot put with a distance of 49-feet, 11-inches, finishing behind only Division I throwers.

Sophomore Jeff Pichie led three Stonehill runners in a field of 16 in the 3000-meter run with his sixth place finish in 9:04.57. Junior Chris Gendron was eighth in a personal-best 9:13.32, while freshman Shane Braz was ninth in 9:16.45 in his collegiate debut.

Freshman Nickolas McNamee led four Stonehill runners, in a field of 13, in the 1000-meter run, finishing sixth in 2:37.41. 

Other Stonehill Results Include: 

Junior Collin Kuchachik and sophomore Ethan Famiano finished ninth and tenth, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, narrowly missing a spot in the final. Kuchachik finished in 8.85-seconds, while Famiano clocked in a 8.87. 

Senior Daniel Bomba placed tenth out of 17 competitors in the pole vault, clearing a personal-best height of 13-feet, 7.75-inches. 

Senior Darren Shi placed 15th out of 24 entries in the weight throw, clearing a distance of 44-feet, 4.25-inches. 

Stonehill returns to action next Saturday, January 26, when it splits between the John Thomas Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University, and the Branwen Smith-King Invitational, hosted by Tufts University.
