NE10 Track & Field Weekly Report

EASTON, Mass. (April 19, 2018) – Junior Xavier Young (Barnegat, New Jersey/Barnegat) and the Stonehill College men's 4x100-meter relay team have both collected Northeast-10 Conference men's track & field weekly honors from the league office today.

Young earns NE10 Field Rookie Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this spring after being named the Indoor Rookie Field Athlete of the Year over the winter. He helped lead Stonehill to a second place team finish at the Silfen Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College, on Friday and Saturday with a pair of season-best performances. He placed second out of 37 throwers in the shot put with his distance of 50-feet, 7.50-inches, that matched the winning distance, but placed second based on his second-longest throw of the afternoon. Young followed that up by placing 11th out of 40 competitors in the discus throw with a distance of 124-feet, 10-inches. His shot put distance ranks second on the NE10 performance chart, while his discus distance ranks tenth.

Stonehill's 4x100-meter relay earns NE10 Relay of the Week honors for the first time this season after turning in a first place finish at the Silfen Invitational on Saturday. The Skyhawks took first out of ten teams with a season-best time of 42.33-seconds, just a quarter of a second shy of the program record and good for third on the NE10 performance chart this spring. Freshman Desmond Bernal (Warwick, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) ran the lead leg for Stonehill and then handed the baton to sophomore Justin Ireland (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) for the second leg, with senior All-American Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) running the third leg before junior Joe Connolly (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Austin Prep) completed the anchor leg.

The 4x100 is the third Stonehill relay to collect NE10 Relay of the Week honors this year. Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay, which included Hubbell and Bernal, earned the honors on December 6, while the 4000-meter distance medley relay received the recognition twice on January 24 and February 8.

Young, competing with the track & field program as a junior after three seasons with the football program, earned All-East Region honors for the shot put during the indoor season from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in addition to his NE10 Indoor Rookie of the Year accolades. He recorded a school-record throw of 49-feet, 11.50-inches at the NE10 Indoor Track & Field Championships in February, which earned him All-NE10 honors at the Championships with a second place finish in the event.

Young earned NE10 Field Athlete of the Week honors after his first school-record effort at URI on February 13. He has appeared in all 31 games of his collegiate career with the Stonehill football program, starting all ten as a junior last fall. He has totaled 42 tackles (14 solo), including 2.5 tackles for a loss of 13 yards, with a sack for a loss of ten over his football career heading into his senior season next fall. Young has been named to the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll three semesters.

Stonehill is back in action this weekend, when it competes at the Holy Cross Invitational, hosted by the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Saturday at 11 a.m. Stonehill will host its 11th annual Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 28.
