Juniors Lead Men's Track & Field on Opening Night of Silfen Invitational

Taxter and Onken post second place finishes to lead Skyhawks

NEW LONDON, Conn. (April 13, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program, ranked No. 1 in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Region rankings, turned in a pair of second place finishes to highlight four top five placements in just four events, on the opening night of the 2018 Silfen Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College at David and Lyn Silfen Track & Field Complex tonight.

Junior All-American Lucas Taxter (Readville, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) finished second out of 28 entries, leading four Stonehill runners in the 1500-meter run, including a pair in the top five with his personal-best time of 3:53.94, improving on his third-ranked time for the event in the Northeast-10 Conference this spring. Classmate Riley Dowd (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veteran's Memorial) placed fifth in a season-low 3:58.38.

Junior John Onken (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) took second in the 10,000-meter run out of 18 entries with a time of 32:26.51, good for second on the NE10 performance list for the season. Sophomore Chris Gendron (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) finished ninth in 33:55.97, which ranks sixth on the NE10 performance list.

Junior All-American Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) finished fifth in the 800-meter run with his time of 1:53.76. Junior David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) placed 18th in the field of 34 runners with a time of 1:58.02.

Junior Lawrence Carney (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) placed 12th out of 28 entries in the 5000-meter run in a personal-best time of 15:03.01, tops in the NE10 this season.

Stonehill finished the opening night of the Invitational in second place in the team standings, behind fellow NE10 member Franklin Pierce University, with 11 points.

Stonehill will continue its weekend at the Silfen Invitational on Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. Stonehill will host its 11th annual Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 28.
