Barnegat, New Jersey, junior receives honor after strong performance at outdoor opener on Saturday

EASTON, Mass. (April 4, 2018) – Stonehill College junior Xavier Young (Barnegat, New Jersey/Barnegat) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Field Rookie of the Week by the league office today.

Competing in just his sixth collegiate meet after making his outdoor debut at Saturday's UMass Lowell Invitational, Young turned in two strong throwing performances to help lead Stonehill at the outdoor season-opener. He placed third in the shot put with a distance of 48-feet, even, and then finished fifth in the discus throw with a distance of 117-feet, 3-inches. Young recorded the longest shot put distance in the NE10 through the early part of the season, while adding the fifth-longest discus throw of the spring to date.

Young, the NE10 Field Rookie Athlete of the Year for the indoor track & field season, earned All-East Region honors for the shot put during the indoor season from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) with his school-record throw of 49-feet, 11.50-inches at the NE10 Indoor Track & Field Championships. The distance also earned him All-NE10 honors at the Championships with a second place finish in the event.

Young broke his own school-record with his effort at the NE10 Indoor Championships set the week prior with another 15-plus meter throw of 49-feet, 7.00-inches to place fourth at the University of Rhode Island. He broke the previous school mark of 49-01.50 by Mason Griffin '15 at the 2015 New England Championships. Young qualified for the New England Indoor Championships, where he placed 16th (46-10.25), after placing second at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational (48-08.00) and fifth at the URI Sorlien Memorial Invitational (48-08.25) in his first collegiate meet.

Stonehill is back in action this weekend, when it competes at the 53rd Annual Berkeley Realty Property Management Colonial Relays, hosted by College of William & Mary, Friday and Saturday. Stonehill will host its 11th annual Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 28.
