Barnegat, New Jersey, junior thrower caps strong debut season for Skyhawks

NE10 Announces Indoor Track & Field Award Winners

EASTON, Mass. (March 29, 2018) – Stonehill College junior thrower Xavier Young (Barnegat, New Jersey/Barnegat) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Men's Rookie Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor track & field season, as selected by the league's head coaches.

Young enjoyed a record-breaking debut winter season with the shot put for Stonehill, joining the track and field program following the conclusion of the Stonehill football season in which he is a three-year letterwinner on the defensive line. He competed in five events during the indoor season for the Skyhawks, earning All-East Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, with his school-record throw of 49-feet, 11.50-inches at the NE10 Indoor Track & Field Championships. The distance also earned him All-NE10 honors at the Championships with a second place finish in the event.

Young is Stonehill's first NE10 Rookie Field Athlete of the Year, and the first field athlete from the Skyhawks to earn a major postseason award since eight-time All-American and 2011 Indoor High Jump National Champion Corey Thomas '13 was named the NE10 Athlete of the Year for the third time in his career as senior in 2013.

Young broke his own school-record with his effort at the NE10 Indoor Championships set the week prior with another 15-plus meter throw of 49-feet, 7.00-inches to place fourth at the University of Rhode Island. He broke the previous school mark of 49-01.50 by Mason Griffin '15 at the 2015 New England Championships. Young qualified for the New England Indoor Championships, where he placed 16th (46-10.25), after placing second at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational (48-08.00) and fifth at the URI Sorlien Memorial Invitational (48-08.25) in his first collegiate meet.

Young earned NE10 Field Athlete of the Week honors after his first school-record effort at URI on February 13. He has appeared in all 31 games of his collegiate career with the Stonehill football program, starting all ten as a junior last fall. He has totaled 42 tackles (14 solo), including 2.5 tackles for a loss of 13 yards, with a sack for a loss of ten over his football career. Young has been named to the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll three semesters.

Stonehill opens its outdoor season on Saturday, when it competes at the UMass Lowell River Hawk Invitational, starting at 9 a.m. Stonehill will host its 11th annual Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 28.
