Men's Track & Field Competes at URI Coaches’ Tribute Meet

Boyd and Bradford earn event wins, while Young breaks shot put record

KINGSTON, R.I. (February 9, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program opened a split weekend by posting a pair of event wins and collecting a school record at the Coaches' Tribute Meet, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, at Mackal Fieldhouse tonight.

Freshman Hampton Boyd (Holliston, Massachusetts/Holliston) built off a strong weekend at the New England Championships in which he picked up a pair of All-New England relay honors, but winning the 500-meter dash in 1:06.77. He was just ahead of junior Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven) in second with a time of 1:07.73.

Senior Sam Bradford (Bedford, Massachusetts/Bedford) led a field of 16 entries in the 3000-meter run, with his first place finish in a personal-best 8:49.40. Junior John Onken (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) placed eighth in 9:14.78.

Senior Kenny Vinacco (Scituate, Rhode Island/Scituate) finished second out of 21 entries, including four Stonehill teammates, in the one mile run, posting a personal-best time of 4:25.68 – good for first among collegiate runners in the event. Senior Alex Southiere (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Cumberland) finished eighth in a personal-best 4:33.30, followed by freshmen Jeff Pichie (Burrillville, Rhode Island) and Christopher Lanahan (Mendham, New Jersey/West Morris-Mendham) in ninth and tenth, respectively. Pichie posted a season-best time of 4:33.85, with Lanahan finishing in a season-best 4:34.32 and then junior Lawrence Carney (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) taking 11th in 4:36.29.

Junior Xavier Young (Barnegat, New Jersey/Barnegat), competing in just his fourth collegiate meet, broke Stonehill's program record in the shot put with a distance of 49-feet, 7-inches for a fourth place finish out of 24 entries. With the second-longest throw in the NE10 this season, he surpassed the previous program mark of 49-feet, 1.50-inches by Mason Griffin at the 2015 New England Championships at Boston University. Junior Darren Shi (Yarmouth, Massachusetts/Yarmouth) placed tenth with a throw of 44-06.75.

Senior Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) took fourth in the weight throw with a personal-best distance of 54-feet, 11.5-inches – good for third in the NE10 this season. Shi was 11th with a personal-best throw of 42-11.50.

Freshman Ethan Famiano (Warwick, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) finished third in the 60-meter high hurdles in a personal-best 8.49-seconds, fourth-fastest in the NE10 this season, while sophomore Collin Kuchachik (Orange, Connecticut/Amity Regional) finished fifth in 8.68-seconds. Famiano, who qualified third for the final with a time of 8.63-seconds in the prelims, was first among five NE10 hurdlers in the final. Kuchachik qualified fifth for the final in 8.68-seconds. Famiano also placed 16th out of 28 entries in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.02-seconds, while Kuchachik was 21st in 24.52-seconds.

Senior Anthony Innamorati (Clinton, Massachusetts/Clinton) and junior Daniel Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the pole vault. Innamorati cleared a season-best height of 14-feet, 0.5-inches, good for fourth in the NE10 this winter, while Bomba reached a personal-best 13-06.50. 

Other Stonehill Results on Friday Include:

Senior Jordan Sullivan (Sound Beach, New York/Miller Place) placed fourth overall and third among collegians in the high jump as he cleared 6-feet, 1.5-inches. 

Sophomore Jeremy Breen (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) and freshman Sean Conlan (Melrose, Massachusetts/Melrose) finished eighth and ninth, respectively in the 800-meter run. Breen clocked in with a time of 2:01.38, while Conlan finished in 2:01.76 in the field of 18 runners. 

Senior Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) and sophomore Andrew Scarlotto (Portsmouth, New Hampshire/Portsmouth) finished 10th and 11th, respectively, out of 21 competitors in the 400-meter dash. Hubbell posted a time of 52.24-seconds, while Scarlotto finished in 52.25.           

Stonehill is back in action tomorrow, when eight student-athletes compete at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m. The Skyhawks will compete at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships next Saturday and Sunday, November 17 and 18 at Smith College Track in Northampton, Massachusetts.
