Men's Track & Field Finishes Third at NE10 Outdoor Championships

Santo leads two All-NE10 performances on day two with 5000-meter title

EASTON, Mass. (May 7, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program used six All-Conference performances over two days to fuel a third place team finish at the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium today.

Senior Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) captured his second distance title of the weekend by competing in the 5000-meter run today after winning his first 10,000-meter run title on Saturday. Running the distance double for the first time in his career, Santo broke away in the second half of the 5000m today, finishing in 14:46.90 – 16-seconds in front of the second place runner. Santo broke the program and facility records for the 10,000m on Saturday, to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships later this month.

Santo led five Stonehill entries that scored points for the Skyhawks in the event, with senior Daniel Nolan (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) finishing fourth in a season-best time of 15:06.47. Classmate Tyler Henseler (Coventry, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) placed fifth in a personal-best 15:15.40, while junior Sam Bradford (Bedford, Massachusetts/Bedford) was seventh in a season-best time of 15:30.02 and sophomore Lawrence Carney (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) took eighth in a personal-best 15:32.19.

Stonehill finished third in the final team standings with 113 points – just 1.50 points behind second place Franklin Pierce University (114.50). Southern Connecticut State University won its 14th team title over the last 15 years after a one-year hiatus. 2016 champions American International College placed fourth with 86 points.


Vercollone earned All-NE10 honors in the 800-meter run with his second place finish.

Sophomore Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) earned All-NE10 honors with his second place finish in the 800-meter run, leading three Stonehill entries in the top ten. Vercollone finished in 1:52.81 – just 0.59-seconds behind All-American Dage Minors. Sophomore David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) finished seventh in 1:54.73, while classmate Matthew Shaw (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) was ninth in a personal-best 1:55.87.

Junior Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) finished third in the decathlon with a school-record 5,921 points, breaking his own previous school mark of 5,889 points set at the Holy Cross Invitational in 2016. He fell just 185 points behind event winner Michael Griffith of Southern Connecticut State. After recording personal-bests in the high jump (6-4.25) and 100-meter dash (11.46) on Saturday, Hamalian finished fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.83-seconds) and then capped the ten events with a fourth place finish in the 1500-meter run in a season-best 4:57.92. 

Other Stonehill Highlights Include: 

Junior James Murphy (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best 9:28.56. 

Freshman Andrew Scarlotto (Portsmouth, New Hampshire/Portsmouth) finished fourth in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best 50.01-seconds, leading three Stonehill runners in the top ten. Senior All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) earned a point in eight in a season-best time of 50.48-seconds, while sophomore Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven) placed ninth in 50.70-seconds. 


Hamalian broke his own school record in the decathlon, finishing third in the event.

Freshman Atiba McLaren (Pittsford, New York/McQuaid Jesuit) placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 56.25-seconds. 

Madsen, Scarlotto, McLaren and Baldasare combined to place fourth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:21.88. 

Baldasare and McLaren were also part of Stonehill's 4x100-meter relay that finished sixth in 43.59-seconds. Sophomore Joe Connolly (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Austin Prep) ran the lead leg, followed by junior Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) who took the baton second and then handed off to McLaren and then Baldasare to complete the run. 

Sophomore Darren Shi (Yarmouth, Massachusetts/Yarmouth) placed seventh in the shot put with a personal-best distance of 45-feet, 1-inch. 

Junior Jonathan Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) placed eighth in the triple jump by clearing a personal-best distance of 45-feet, 4.25-inches. 

Junior Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) finished ninth in the discus throw by clearing a personal-best distance of 122-feet, 8-inches. 

Stonehill is back in action next weekend when its New England qualifiers compete at the New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Williams College, on Friday and Saturday in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
