Newburyport, Massachusetts, senior wins 10,000-meter run to lead Skyhawks
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 8, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program turned in a second place team finish at the seventh annual Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by American International College, at Hoyt Track & Field Complex on Saturday.
Stonehill compiled 72.50 points on the afternoon for its second place finish, trailing just Southern Connecticut State University's 145 points. Merrimack College took third with 69.50-points, while the University of Southern Maine was fourth with 59 points and host American International rounded out the top five with 55 points.
Senior Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) led a Stonehill sweep of the top three positions in the 10,000-meter run with his first place finish in 31:37.28 to lap the field by 43-seconds. Junior Kenny Vinacco (Scituate, Rhode Island/Scituate) followed in second with his time of 32:20.77, while sophomore John Onken (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) was third in 32:25.59.
Sophomore Riley Dowd (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) led a pack of four Stonehill runners in the top ten of the 1500-meter run, including three in the top five in a field of 65, with a second place finish in 4:02.41, getting edged by AIC junior Mitchell Byrne at the tape by just 0.37-seconds. Junior James Murphy (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) placed fourth in 4:04.84, while sophomore Christopher Drace (Franklin, New Jersey/Pope John XXIII) rounded out the top five in 4:05.76. Sophomore Alexander Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) took eighth in 4:07.06.

Stonehill placed a pair of 4x400-meter relay teams in the top four, with the first crossing the line second in 3:27.35. Running for the Skyhawks B-relay were junior Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep), sophomore Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven), freshman Atiba McLaren (Pittsford, New York/McQuaid Jesuit) and then freshman Andrew Scarlotto (Portsmouth, New Hampshire/Portsmouth).
Stonehill's A-relay of senior Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham), junior Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton), sophomore David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) and then sophomore Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) finished fourth in 3:29.88.
Vercollone also placed third out of 66 runners in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.58. Classmate Matthew Shaw (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) led five Skyhawks that finished from 12th to 20th in 2:00.39. Scarlotto also finished fifth out of 46 entries on the 400-meter dash with his time of 51.38-seconds, while Hubbell placed tenth in 51.84.
Junior Jordan Sullivan (Sound Beach, New York/Miller Place) placed third in the high jump as he matched his personal-best height of 6-feet, 2.75-inches, set at this same meet a year ago and match on two other occasions as well. Classmate Anthony Innamorati (Clinton, Massachusetts/Clinton) rounded out Stonehill's top five placewinners, with a fifth-place finish out of 18 entries in the pole vault as he cleared a height of 12-feet, 11.50-inches.

Senior Tyler Henseler (Conventry, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) placed eighth out of 47 runners in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:43.75.
Sophomore Darren Shi (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) placed ninth out of 34 throwers in the shot put with a distance of 41-feet, 10.75-inches.
Junior Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) placed ninth out of 23 competitors in the hammer throw with a distance of 157-feet, 3-inches, while finishing 17th in the discus throw at 111-feet, 11-inches.
Freshman Alexander Buchan (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) placed 11th in the javelin throw with a distance of 150-feet, 9-inches.
McLaren finished 14th out of 31 entries in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.40-seconds.
Stonehill returns to the track in Western Massachusetts next Saturday at the Minuteman Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts, starting at 11:30 a.m. Stonehill, which is host of the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 5-6, will host its Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 29, starting at 10:30 p.m.
