Plenty of PRs as Men's Track & Field Competes at Hemery Valentine Invitational

Sophomores strong in final meet heading into championship season

BOSTON, Mass. (February 11, 2017) – Stonehill College posted several personal-bests as its sophomore class shined at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University, at the BU Track & Tennis Center today.

Junior Jordan Sullivan (Sound Beach, New York/Miller Place) turned in the top finish of the day for Stonehill as he placed ninth out of 39 competitors in the high jump by clearing a personal-best height of 6-feet, 4.75-inches. He missed just once on the first four progressions, clearing his personal-best height on the first attempt, before missing on 6-6.75.

Junior Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) finished 56th out of 230 entries in the 200-meter dash in a personal-best time of 22.43-seconds.

Freshman Andrew Scarlotto (Portsmouth, New Hampshire/Portsmouth) won his section and finished 49th out of 203 entries overall, leading three Stonehill competitors in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 49.70-seconds. Senior All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) finished 87th in a season-best time of 50.55-seconds, while freshman Atiba McLaren (Pittsford, New York/McQuaid Jesuit) was 148th in 52.11-seconds.

Sophomore Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) and senior Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) both won their sections with season-best times and placed 45th and 57th, respectively, out of 210 entries in the 800-meter run. Vercollone finished in 1:54.33, while Burleigh posted a time of 1:54.95.

Sophomores Alexander Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) and Riley Dowd (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) finished 80th and 83rd, respectively, out of 318 competitors overall, among five Skyhawks in the one mile run. Demeule posted a personal-best time of 4:17.04, while Dowd ran the event in a personal-best 4:17.80, and classmate Christopher Drace (Franklin, New Jersey/Pope John XXIII) placed 108th in a personal-record 4:19.76.

Sophomore Matthew Shaw (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) led three Stonehill runners in the 1000-meter run with a 52nd place finish, out of 91 entries, in 2:33.11. Classmate David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) placed 59th in 2:34.33, while freshman Jeremy Breen (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) was right behind in 60th in a personal-best 2:34.34.

Other Stonehill highlights included:

Sophomore Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven) finished 29th out of 60 runners in the 500-meter dash with a personal-best time of 1:06.46.

Junior Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) finished 31st out of 48 entries in the weight throw with a distance of 49-feet, 9-inches.

Stonehill opens its indoor championship schedule next Saturday with the Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, starting at 4 p.m.
