Men's Track & Field Finishes Fourth at Coaches Tribute Meet

Skyhawks earn ten top five finishes on Saturday

KINGSTON, R.I. (February 4, 2017) – Stonehill College recorded ten top five finishes to place fourth in the team standings at the Coaches Tribute Meet, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, at Mackal Fieldhouse this afternoon.

Stonehill compiled 57.50 points for the meet for its fourth place team finish, first among the seven non-Division I programs competing at the event. Host Rhode Island won the meet with 193 points, while the University of New Hampshire was second with 83.50.

Sophomore Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) was Stonehill's top finisher at the meet as he ran second out of 33 entries in the 800-meter run in 1:57.38. Classmate Matthew Shaw (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) was 14th in 1:59.21.

Vercollone also ran as part of Stonehill's 4000-meter distance medley relay took second in 10:41.22. Sophomore Alex Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) ran the opening 1200-meter leg, followed by Vercollone for the 400-meter leg and then senior Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) completed the 800-meter leg, before sophomore Matthew Shaw (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) ran the one mile anchor leg.

Burleigh also placed third out of 16 entries in the 500-meter run in 1:07.96, while sophomore Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven) finished ninth in 1:09.47. Demeule scored in the one mile run with his fourth place finish, out of 16 entries, in 4:22.65.

Freshman Andrew Scarlotto (Portsmouth, New Hampshire/Portsmouth) finished third out of 26 runners in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 51.42-seconds, to go with an 18th place finish in the 200-meter dash in 23.32-seconds.

Scarlotto and Madsen were part of Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay that placed fourth in 3:32.77. Madsen ran the lead leg, followed by freshmen Atiba McLaren (Pittsford, New York/McQuaid Jesuit) and Scarlotto, before senior Steven Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) ran the anchor leg.


Scarlotto ran a personal record in the 400m and also competed in the 200m and 4x400-relay.

Junior Jonathan Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) placed third out of 17 entries in the triple jump with a distance of 44-feet, 4.00-inches. Junior Jordan Sullivan (Sound Beach, New York/Miller Place) finished fifth out of 13 athletes in the high jump by clearing a height of 6-feet, 4.25-inches. 

Other Results Include: 

Junior Anthony Innamorati (Clinton, Massachusetts/Clinton) placed fifth out of ten vaulters in the pole vault by clearing a height of 13-feet, 1.50-inches. 

Junior James Murphy (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) placed fifth out of 20 runners in the 3000-meter run in a personal-best time of 8:50.10. 

Junior Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) finished eighth out of 24 entries in the weight throw by clearing a personal-best distance of 51-feet, 9.75-inches. 

Sophomore Darren Shi (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) finished ninth out of 21 entries in the shot put with a personal-best distance of 44-feet, 11-inches. 

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday when it participates in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University, at the BU Track & Tennis Center, starting at 10 a.m.
