Men's Track & Field Competes at URI’s Sorlein Invitational

Vercollone and Santo lead again as Skyhawks place fifth in team standings

KINGSTON, R.I. (January 21, 2017) – Stonehill College competed at the Sorlein Invitational, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, at Mackal Fieldhouse today.

Sophomore Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) led seven Stonehill runners, including three in the top five, in the 800-meter run with his third place finish in 1:58.50. He was followed close behind by sophomore Matthew Shaw (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) in fourth place with a time of 1:58.96, while senior Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) was fifth in 1:58.98.

Senior Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) placed fourth in the one mile run with his time of 4:22.36, while junior Kenny Vinacco (Scituate, Rhode Island/Scituate) was seventh in 4:29.22 and senior Tyler Henseler (Coventry, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) was eighth in 4:30.29.

Junior Jordan Sullivan (Sound Beach, New York/Miller Place) also turned in a fourth place finish for Stonehill in the high jump, clearing 6-feet, 1.25-inches.

Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 3:28.66. Senior All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) ran the lead leg, followed by junior Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/Saint John's Prep), sophomore Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven) and then freshman Andrew Scarlotto (Portsmouth, New Hampshire/Portsmouth) ran the anchor leg.

Scarlotto also finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in 52.30-seconds and Baldasare was sixth in 52.56. Madsen also placed seventh in the 500-meter run in 1:09.20, while Hubbell was 11th in the long jump with a distance of 20-feet, 1.00-inch.

Stonehill placed fifth as a team at the event by accumulating 35 points. Host Rhode Island took the team title with 188 points, edging out the University of Connecticut with 173 points.

Other Results Include: 

Junior Anthony Innamorati (Clinton, Massachusetts/Clinton) placed sixth in the pole vault for clearing 13-feet, 7.25-inches, while sophomore Daniel Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) finished eighth at 13-01.50. 

Sophomore Darren Shi (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth Academy) placed sixth in the shot put with a distance of 42-feet, 6.75-inches.

Sophomore John Onken (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) finished ninth in the 3000-meter run with his time of 8:54.07, while classmate Alexander Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) was right on his heels in tenth place in 8:55.24 to lead five Skyhawks competing in the event.

Sophomore Joe Connolly (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Austin Prep) placed tenth in the 60-meter dash prelims with his time of 7.36-seconds. He was also 13th in the 200-meter dash in 23.73-seconds, while freshman Atiba McLaren (Rochester, New York/McQuaid Jesuit) finished 14th in 24.42-seconds.

McLaren was also 11th in the 60-meter high hurdles in 9.53-seconds, while freshman Collin Kuchachik (Orange, Connecticut/Amity Regional) finished tenth in 9.18-seconds.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday when it competes at both the John Thomas Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University, as well as the Tufts Stampede, hosted by Tufts University, with both events starting at 11 a.m.
